Celeron or Pentium 4 ?

Post by Jody Carver »

Can anyone explain the difference re- these
two processors?. Im buying a laptop and the cost factor is substantially higher with a
Pentium processor.

I will do mostly e mail and surfing the Internet, can anyone give me any advantages as far as performance etc between the two above mentioned? I have a dial up modem as
Cable is N/A here. Speed is not my objective
Im interested in what is better and why.

Faster is better. That's the main difference, from a user's perspective. The Celeron is a very low-end consumer processor, and it's S.L.O.W.

Jody-- b0b's right that the Celeron is low-end compared to the P4 but SLOW??? Compared to what? It might be very fast compared to your typing and/or the transmission rate of your telco line. For email and web surfing on dial-up, the CPU is not the cork in the bottle.

With DUN, about the best you're going to get is less than 50kb download and a bit more than 30kb upload. That translates to 4-5 minutes per megabyte for downloading stuff from the net to your machine. You DON'T need a P4 or even a 'fast' Celeron to handle those speeds.

You also don't need a fancy graphic card/chip or a huge amount of memory, either. But a good graphic card and something over 128MB of RAM will help performance more than a 1 to 2 GB processor.

The above relates to your stated purpose of email and surfing. Some music software is CPU intensive as are some compression/conversion programs. You're somewhat limited with a laptop, anyway, but if you plan on doing music stuff or extreme gaming, a more powerful machine might be called for.

Jody...

I've been using a 300 MHz Celeron with 64 Meg of RAM for the last several years, primarily just for surfing the net, email, & some low end wordprocessing & spreadsheet programs. My stuff is ancient history compared to what's available today, but it works just fine for what I use it for.

Like you, my only choice is a modem/phone line for my ISP connection. That's probably the weakest link in the chain, so I doubt if a faster system would do me much good.

George

The vast amount of time is spent with the computer waiting on the actions of the user, rather than the reverse.

chip?? If so,,,say it,,if not, then the Celeron is?,,,Oh hell,I dont know, which one should I buy,,,hurry Herb..operators are standing by, my call is important to them and you take your sweet time? This call may
be monitored for training purpose's and quality control...they cant wait all day 4 U

Oh, you want it in English?
Try this...
Is it worth it to spend the extra $ on a high powered sports car if your're only going to drive on congested highways were the speed limit is 55mph?

Remember these highway are so crowded you can't possibly do the speed limit anyway.

or this:
"Get the cheaper one!"

Joey has a pretty good translation, Jodester!

In computers, high power and more speed is always better, but do you need the money more than the technology?

If you're a serious game-player, and when you shoot the Nazis in Wolfenstein's castle they have to fall down immediately, or if you're doing some heavy math-intensive stuff like video-editing or music production, etc., go with the Pentium.

If you're basically doing e-mail and Internet surfing, with occasional music playing or CD burning, all you really need is a machine in the 600-800mhz range, IMHO. But again, in computers "More" is always "Better." Image

I tried out a laptop a few weeks ago for BIAB. It had an AMD processor and did the job well. I didn't keep it as it turned out, but that was a financial reason rather than a performance reason.

Jody: I'd be careful with a lap-top if I was you. I saw a CNN crawl today that said some guy in the UK was using his and it got hot and burnt one of his family jewels. I know at our age it shouldn't matter but I just wanted you to know of the hazards ! Image Image

Philco ? Whats wrong with Dumont ?

All seriousness aside, I stay about 1 year behind in my PC's, maybe longer.

We operate on cable modem here at the house and here is the difference betwenn the 3 primary PC's we use for both business and fun:

Cable modem advertises up to 50 times faster than Dial up.

P4 2 GIG HZ ( daughters) speed test at 1.2 m
tons of ram
P4 1.1 GHZ (Daughters) speed test at 1.1 M
tons of ram
My P3 350 MHZ speed test at 700kb which is still 35 times faster than dial up.

I do run WIN98 Second Edition as well and have 1028 ram.

Maybe one of these days I will get an 800 or 900 MHZ PC..as soon as they are at the dollar store !

I agree with the comments above..the final speed is relative..compared to what ?

I like to compare the relative speed to how fast my relatives leave after dinner, which is what they only came for anyway.

Weird.., well I've been accused of being a lot of things...weird doesn't come to mind though...

lets see:

Plays to loud
talks to loud
eats to much
watches Seinfeld
plays a Carter
Cheap
argues
opinionated
stubborn
plays a Carter
plays a Tele'
drives with his turn signal on
drives too fast
drives too slow
falls asleep too early
gets up too early
wears the same jeans too many days in a row
not sure if I like the Nashville 1000
loved my Twin
loved my Sho-Buds
Still want an Emmons
crappy chess player

many more...
But as you can see weird is not on the list...

Maybe I will add it..

Hey Jody, I've been using AMD for years now without ANY problems at all and the cost is a lot lower than a Pentium. Give one a try and I think you'll be very happy with the performance!! Go to the AMD sight and check it out. They have a lot of info on AMD vs. Pentium.

I'm sure a Celeron would be fine
for your needs. Tony's idea about buying
"behind the technology curve" is a good one.
I use a refurbished IBM brand PC. It was 'state of the art' in 1998.
A $150 upgrade on the chip and it becomes 'state of the art' for the year 2000. It cost less than $400, and is more powerful than I need it to be. --Joel
