Default locations

Post by Gary Pederson »

Anybody know a way to change the default start location (Windows ME) for the Search function. My sytem always uses "C:\windows\start menu". I almost always want to search my entire c drive.
Another irritating default is when I do open under Notepad's File dropdown menu it always goes to the "My Documents" folder. I'd also like to change this default. Thanks for any suggestions.

On my Windows 2000 box if I right click the Start button and choose Search, it does bring up the search at the Start Menu. However if I left click Start and choose Search, it comes up with Local Harddrives. Try that.

Good, there's one down! Image NotePad "may or may not" use the same default location as Word, so you might try this. In Word, go to Tools-Options-File Locations. Modify the default location for Documents from My Documents and see if that also changes the default for NotePad. If not, just restore the default location for Word.

Gary,

I do not know of any way to change the default location for Notepad. As far as I know it is stuck at My Documents usless you manually browse to another location.

I tried changing my default location in Word and it did not change the Notepad location.

Just as well that the Word suggestion didn't work, since the only thing I have for Word is the free viewer.
Here is another question though. Normally when I want to start a program that I have a shortcut for on my desktop I double click it. Occasionally I switch modes & a double click doesn't work. A single click displays a menu & I can select open. I usually click in a vacant location in the taskbar to put myself back into double click mode. Any ideas on what I might be doing that causes this mode switch. I not aware of doing anything different when this happens.

Gary,

Just make sure you are "LEFT" clicking that icon. When you right click an icon it will display a menu. If you Double-Click a "RIGHT" click it will display a menu when you do a single left click.

This happens to me all the time...I work too fast!

Mark, I'm certain the double right click is my problem. I'm probably doing it without being aware. I didn't know that a double right click would affect the left click. Maybe this explains why I have trouble playing banjo type rolls :-)
