I have Windows Me on my laptop. My stepson uses my computer and went onto a website that he downloaded a picture from, and it automatically made this picture the default for the startup and shutdown screens. I find this picture to be in very bad taste (if you know what I mean ). I need to know how to get rid of this picture and replace it with something else.

Go to "Start", "settings", "Control panel. Double click on "Display and then on the "Background" tab. Can change the picture from there.
The pic in question will probably be stored in the Windows directory as a .bmp file of whatever name. You can delete the pic from there as well.

Richard;
I think the method Graham described is for changing the background (wallpaper) image on your desktop. From what you wrote, I'm thinking you're talking about the start up and shutdown Windows picture. HEre's a link to change it: Replace the Startup and Shutdown Screens If after looking at the page, it seems a bit complicated, just ask your stepson to change it back.
Good luck!

Ernie

Try this:

1) Minimize any open windows.
2) Put mouse pointer somewhere on desktop and right click.
3) Hit properties, then select background tab, then hit browse and locate the contents of the offending file in the windows directory.
4) Delete it and you're back.

If I read the question correctly, Ernie has the right fix. The startup/shutdown screen is different from the wallpaper (background).

Your son must have got into one of those sites that setup the screens, homepage, etc. I've seen where they are trying to enact a law that they can't do that or the multitude of popup screens, but they'll probably disregard it.

After I originally posted for help, and calmed down a bit, I went into the registry and found the entry that was causing the pic to be used. Deleteing that entry solved my problem. I had already tried all the suggestions above.

Thanks for the link to annoyances.com. Nice informative website.
