Internet Explorer non-connection

I have a problem with Internet Explorer 5.0. After an upgrade from win95 to Win98 I found I had to reinstall the modem, which is not Plug and Play. I did so, and the modem connects to my ISP OK. But, when I try to access a web address - any web address - using MIE I get "page cannot be displayed". The dial-up icon in systray does not flicker, as it should when it is doing work. It seems that the browser is not recognizing the internet connection.

I have removed and re-added the dial-up connection using the Internet Connection Wizard - no help. I have checked to be sure I'm not using a proxy server - no help.

Question 1 - Am I missing anything?

Question 2 - I'm considering removing and re-installing MIE. I have a CD of MIE ver. 5.5. Are there any pitfalls to doing this?

I just solved somebody's IE problems by having her install 5.5 -- so you might give it a try.

First, though, go to Tools . . Internet Options . . Connections and make sure you've got the right settings selected (you may have multiple ISP settings, for example), and double-check to see if the settings within that ISP are correct.

Lou: You might try the "add/remove" programs in "My Computer" and go to Internet Explorer and click on add/remove and there should be a "Repair Internet Explorer" and click on this to repair corrupted IE files.

I.E. 5.5 is a better version than 5.0 and has some security fixes in it. I.E. 5.5 is what is supplied with Windows ME.

Upgrading to 5.5 may fix the problems of I.E. not recognizing your Dial up network connection. But it could be, as stated above, and that will correct it. If you don't tell I.E. what DUN connection to use it doesn't know.

No joy - and it gets curiouser and curiouser.

I was going to follow Bill's suggestion first and try the repair option (which neither I nor anybody here at work knew about - thanks Bill). However, in the add/remove programs list, Internet Explorer does not appear. This is the case on both PCs I upgraded from Win95 to 98 - my wife's and my son's. My wife's works fine; my son's does not. I have compared settings on these two PCs and they are the same. The IE 5.5 disk I have still wants to download components from Microsoft, which it can't do.

The PC gurus here at work suggested that I bring it in for a laying on of hands, which I'll do. I know it's much easier when you can see what's going on - they are as stumped as I.

Is it possible to install IE only from the Windows 98 OEM disk without the necessity of an internet connection? Can I reinstall Win98 from an OEM CD? Should I bite the bullet and spend $15 for an IE CD? I have a 98 OEM disk; the 98 upgrade disk was borrowed. Yo ho ho and a bottle of bilgewater.

It's become a challenge to me now - my son doesn't even care that much; he only wants to download enhancements for The Sims.

IE shows up on Add/Remove on my NT box at work. Maybe on your system it's in Windows Components inside the Add/Remove section.

Lou might try looking in DUN to check and see if there multiple dialup connections made for the same ISP. Sometimes this will cause a browser to not be able to connect to web pages. Also you might try uninstalling and reinstalling DUN this is also a common fix for the problem.

Internet Explorer does not show up on my Windows ME Add/Remove Programs, Install/Uninstall section list.

However it can be removed (or added) by going to the Add/Remove Programs panel and then click the Windows Setup Tab. That panel will allow you to add or remove integral components.

Actually I upgraded 3 PCs from 95 to 98 - the two aforementioned, which were built by a local PC shop (DIT), and my own PC, a Compaq DeskPro EN series. On the Compaq, IE 5.5 does appear in the Add/Remove list; on the DIT boxes with the IE 5.0 version supplied on the upgrade disk it does not. In the Windows setup portion of Add/Remove, under "Internet Tools", all that appears are various components of IE - FrontPage Express, Wallet, Web Publishing Wizard, etc. - no mention of IE as a separate entity. Would removing all the installed components possibly uninstall IE as well?

Does it matter that the problem box is about 5 yr. old; a Pentium 166 MMX?

I have checked for multiple DUN connections - I just have the one. I'll try to remove/install the DUN component when I get home and see if that helps.

Success! Posting this from the offending machine. Deleted and re-installed the dial-up networking component and voila! Son can now download Sims enhancement to his heart's content.

I'm having a similar problem with Juno. Email works fine, but I can't connect to the Web. I get the "Action Cancelled" screen. I'm not sure if this is connected to the problem, but anytime I try to connect to the Internet, I get a message to adjust missing information in the Content Advisor. I've looked there , dont see anything missing. A friend told me his 9 year old contacted a porn site from info from a kid at school, so I recently activated the Content advisor.... but now it seems like I may have created the Frankenstein monster. Can anyone help me out of this morass? It seems like the websites are being contacted, but the response is lost along the way.Thoughts?

I just looked at the content advisor, and there are many options. You'll have to go through each option and determine what you have to do to elimate or at least minimize interfering with normal browser operations.

You can also go to the Advanced section of the Internet Options and click on restore defaults. That may help also.
