Web Page Query

Post by Fred Layman »

I'm giving some thought to setting up a web page. Some of the content I have thought about including is: bio, pictures of some guitars I have built/owned, some how-to-do-it help short articles, tabs of gospel, country, pop numbers, and maybe sell a few items now and then. What service would you fellows that have a site recommend (e.g., AOL Hometown, etc.) and what services would you suggest avoiding and why? Thanks for your suggestions and recommendations.

Hi Fred. Although Angelfire, the provider of free space for my StartUp SteeL page has changed its policy and now blocks the remote linking that used to enable my posting of photos on the forum, it has one property that I really like--you can choose whether to have advertising on a banner on your page or on a pop-up. I HATE POP-UPS!!! So I allow the banner on top and simply start my page down far enough to get past the ad. (See below):

StartUp Steel

On the other hand, sites like Geocities are thoroughly annoying with pop-ups every time you click anything on a page.

Although MSN, my ISP, provides free space (and does allow remote linking) it uses some sort of proprietary architecture that is dopey and incompatible with the precious few internet tricks I have learned.

Hope this is useful in starting your thinking on this.

BTW--Angelfire is now offering something like 30MB of free space which, for your purposes, is huge.

Lori will soon be offering web sites for steel guitarists at a reasonable cost. We will host them on the Forum server. This project has been on hold while we switched servers, but we should have everything ready to go by the end of January.

Right now I need a vacation! Image

I've been very happy with bigstep.com, which offers free web hosting. You can put up lots of photos and text, but not sound files (yet), so I have to park those someplace else and then link to them from my site. But it's very easy to use, and you don't have to know any HTML.

If you want to check it out, visit www.jimcohen.com

I have a friend that has his on webprovider.com:

There are a lot of places that provide free web page hosting.

Take care,

Now Fred, I COULD tell you some stuff but you would rightfully assume I don't know what I am talking about so I will just say when you get your site up and running let me know so I can visit and maybe learn something.

Winston, you already know more that I want you to know, including all those notes and chords I missed while you were backing me on bass.

Fred
I use bigstep.com to host my website. It is very easy to use, easy to update, they offer optional domain registration ($35/year), almost all services are free, they help in getting your site listed on search engines/directories, etc. More than I can answer here. Go to bigstep.com to find out the whole thing.

That 800 meg offer is mighty generous, Joe. If I lived in the States, I'd be transferring the Rebel™ and Ricky site to you!!

We're very close to offering our new website design services exclusively for Forum members only. As b0b said, the priority is to have the new server up and running without problems. Until the official launch, here are some of the terms:

- We design your web page for $50.00/per page. This includes hosting on our server free of charge.
- Your URL will be something like: yourname.steelguitarforum.com
- The cost includes up to four pictures per page.
- Unlimited links and text per page.
- Subsequent changes or updates after publishing to the Internet are billed at our normal hourly rate.
- This offer pertains to personal home pages only.

If you have questions before the official announcement, just email me.
