WTB record player

Post by Gere Mullican »

Anyone know where I might find an inexpensive turntable that I can plug into my computer to put the music on CDs? I have a ton of records (45 and albums) and would like to put some of them on CD before I get rid of the vinyl records. I would prefer to find one close by Nashville. Thanks

About a year or so ago I bought a hi end Technics Turntable with cartridge and needle from a Pawn Shop ..$25..

It's better than any turntable I ever purchased in my younger days.

You may have to preamp it for your PC based on the PC inputs but this could be as simple as getting a small stereo EQ to bump the total gain.. , I bought one of those for $10 bucks ! or if you have a small mixer board , 4 tracker or 8 tracker , you could use any of those as the preamp.

I have burned many of my old LP's to CD this way.

good luck

There are some turntables out there now with digital output. This would be the way for inputing into a computer.

If you have a Circuit City close by, they sell turntables (seperately).

Thank guys for the replies. There is a Circuit City close by and I guess that's the route I will go. Does the turntable have a built in pre amp or do I need to get that separately. I am very electronically challenged. Thanks again.

I think I've seen turntables with built-in preamps but that may be too specialized for Circuit City. Unfortunately if you ask the salesperson he'll just answer "do you want fries with that?"
Oh--by the way--what's a record?

Radio Shack sells a preamp that will connect to a magnetic phono pickup and output a line level signal. I bought one about a year ago. I think it was around $30US. It uses a 9 volt battery for power.

Something that I think is a little funny is that I remember when magnetic phono cartridges were new enough technology that most audio amps didn't have a built-in preamp. Now we've reached the point when phonographs are such old technology that most audio amps don't have a built-in preamp. Image

Turntables and cartridges are also in the catalogs such as Sam Ash and Musicians Friend etc.

If you have an SP/DIF input on your sound card, this one might be the ticket.

Gere,
Dunno what you consider "inexpensive" but, here's one that's available at Sam Ash Music. Its a Numark TTUSB Pro Turntable, for $169.oo. It has a USB output that plugs directly into your computer. 33 & 45 rpm. There's a Sam Ash music store located by Rivergate Shopping Ctr. in Goodletsville. www.samashmusic.com . Hope this helps.

Don't forget if you have a 4 tracker at home, you can probably use that for the preamp as well..
[This message was edited by Tony Prior on 08 October 2006 at 09:19 AM.]

I bought a Technics AV control stero receiver from Rex, Plug caset 2 deck Technics cassett into it, also a turntable, a cd player, mic, then a Harman/ Kardon CDR 20, use analog and you can turn all your other stuff, into a CD on the fly, then make copies of them to use. I copy everything on CD and store the original for future use if one breaks.

Wow! Thanks, guys for all the replies and suggestions.I found one at a yard sale for $10. It has a turntable (33 & 45 rpm), am'fm receiver, double cassette deck and 12 band EQ. I can come out of the earphone jack directly into the sound card and record it all using Goldwave, and then go to CD. I appreciate all the advice. Thanks a ton.
