Looking for a Tuner

Post by Bob Metzger »

I want to get a backup electronic tuner for my steel rig. I realize that the Peterson is probably the best one but I have very limited space in my Pack-a-seat (sound familiar?) so I just want to get one of those very small credit card types but I need something that reads out in Hz or has a needle that reads Hz accurately between 432Hz and 448Hz. Some of those newer, smaller ones are good for guitar but useless for the method I use to tune my steel. I don't really want to spend alot of money but I'd like to get something that does a good job. Is there such an animal? Thanks in adv.

I have a TU12-H and I like it better than the TU-12. Same price for both.

I've got a Peterson that I keep in my seat, but I took it out of the blue "case" and have it in a small case. Fits in my Steeler's choice sidekic compartment with my Match Bro.

Korg CA-30 works for my Dobro. A virtual needle moves in increments of 2.5 cents. It's tiny and at under $20 you might as well try it.

I, too, use a CA-30. They're cheap enough to keep several in your inventory and they work very well. They do not, however, have a lighted meter.

I bought a TU12-H on Jack Stoner's advice and have never regretted it. The suggested retail is over $100, but if you shop around on the web you can find one for under $80.

I've used a TU-12 tuner for years. There was a fellow some years ago that made a neat little bracket that fastened to your guitar's leg and the tuner just sat in it. I bought a JerryRig with the A/B switch so it's right there when I need it. Image

I use a Boss TU-2 pedal. It is small and works really well. It has lights so you can see it on a dark stage. Because of it's size and shape, it can easily be mounted on the leg of your guitar; there are a number of gadgets recently discussed on this forum that will alow leg mounting.
It is the best tuner I have ever used.

Peterson Strobostomp doesn't take up much space in the storage area.

Thanks, all, for your comments and suggestions. I guess a miniature tuner that does all the jobs asked of it by pedal steel users isn't in the mind's eye of the manufacturers yet. Maybe next year.

I use a Seiko ST757 Chromatic Tuner - Less than $25.00 and checked it against a Peterson I used to have and it reads exactly the same!!!!!!!!

Hey, Bob, how's the Right Coast treating you?

I still rely on my trusty and ancient Boss TU-12. Bought the newer lighted version, TU-15, more bells and whistles, but way more susceptible to ambient sound, so almost impossible to tune up if the DJ is blasting during your night club break. A TU-12, clip on flashlight, you're good to go.

I like the TU-2 Tuner pedal. The only problem I have with it is if you have an outdoor gig in the daytime ya can't see the note letters. I usually have a Seiko for backup, acoustics and daylight use.

How about rack mount tuners? How do they compare? Are there any that should be avoided?
