I recently did a month long sitdown with a pretty hot band that played a real variety of music. They really forced me out of my comfort zone and into a area of music that I had never played.
My question, do any of you use a fuzz pedal or other effect pedal to get more of a funky rock sound with your steel. "Play the Funky Music White Boy" just doesn't sound right with normal settings even though I funked it up as best I could. It actually wasn't that bad but there must be an effects that would sound better.
It sure wasn't the style of music I like to play but learning to play outside the box is a good thing. |

| This happened to me also. This band can do 50's and 60's ETC Rock stuff all night or Country all night. There other steel player i guess put his hands over his ears when they done other than what he wanted to play. I got me a blues driver and i kick right along with them. And its fun they said they never heard anything like it. I told them about Robert Randolph. I say get out of the comfort zone and make the steel play anything. You guys that have been doing this As$ kickin stuff know what i mean. Lets Rumble!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????? PS I still love the CRY'in stuff toooo!! |

Ive often wonmdered what PSG players use for distortion or overdrive or fuzz (there is a difference). I hear tube driving devices like the Tubescreamer or Bluesdriver mentioned the most.
My lap steel just absolutely screams with a Boss DS2 in front of it, but sounded awful in front of the PSG, of course I am an awful PSG player so maybe thats why....
I'd Love to hear what is used for PSG, sorry i couoldnt be more helpful. |

The best sound I have heard would be the Bosstone; they are getting rare though, and are generally in poor condition. I have started finding them and restoring the circuits so they don't have so much static in the pots and the ground hum goes away. If you find one in good shape they are excellent.
There is also an out-of-production Voodoo labs version out there that isn't bad. |

| My favorite Fuzz is the DOD flashback Fuzz,followed by the EH Graphic Fuzz,followed by the Dano Fab Distortion.As far as Distortion units I like the Boss Blues Driver. |

I really like my Tubeworks Tube Driver for distortion. I play mostly Contemporary Christian music, and I use the distortion a lot. I also use a Boss AW-2 auto wah quite a bit too. I kind of break out of the stereotypical cryin' country steel sound. Our band doesn't play much country.
I also use the Tube Driver a lot using low single strings for cello, or string like pads. I will be posting links in another thread to some songs our group did for an Easter program where I used this box and the auto way also.
