Post by Matt Steindl »

Anyone tried these? My neck PuP crapped out on me and was thinking about ordering a replacement. Im torn between this or the fender noisless.

Matt --

are you gonna replace the whole set? what do you have in the bridge now? pay attention to matching the outputs somewhat so you have usable tones in all the positions.

i used to work over at sadowsky guitars here in brooklyn and we used alot of dimarzio pickups and they were all good. we also used duncans, and their nashville set is very sweet. same with the antiquity sets.

my personal favorites, however, are any pickups made by jason lollar. if you want noiseless, you should go in another direction. if you want some of the best pickups being made today, conjtact jason lollar (loolarguitars.com). he's also an exceptionally good guy.

hope this helps.

best regards,
mike

The Duncan Alnico 2 pro is a great tele neck pickup. Very sweet. My personal fave although I havent tried every P U available. The Twang King is the only pickup I ever put in a tele that I took out during the first break at a gig. Should be called the Clack King. YMMV.

These are very popular down here in Texas. I have some Van Zandt's in my strat and love them. However, Mr Van Zandt started out rewinding old tele pickups. Supposed to be about the best there is.

My current fave is the Kinmen from down under.
They are noisless and you can order them stock or
with higher output. Not cheap.

The Seymour Duncan Vintage neck sounds good, but the Antiquity neck sounds even better hand scatter wound. I have them on three Teles.

Matt, were you happy with the sound from the pickup before it died? If so, why not have it repaired? If not, why not have it re-wound to get the sound you want?

Wolfe makes some of the best pups you'll find anywhere at any price. He does rewinds on single-coils for $30.00. I've had him do rewinds for me, and the results have been absolutely great. He'll rewind until you're happy, at no extra charge, and he's a great guy to work with. The guy can get you whatever sound you're looking for. Wolfe and Jason Lollar are my two favorite independent winders. Must be something in the water out there in Washington Image

get the PUP that most matches the tone that you are seeking. it doesn't matter if it's made of pure GOLD, if it isn't gonna give you the Tele TONE you are seeking it will be a bust.

DiMarzio makes great pickups and I love the one I have.
One of the major designers for DiMarzio is a steel player and on this Forum.
He knows the Campbells, Robert Randolph and Joe Wright pretty well.

I have a dimazio dp401,inthe bridge,a dimarzio dp402 inthe center, and a lind fralin in the neck on my nashville tele, and i love em.i run a boss cs3,and an original ibanez ad9,and i love the sound, but there again,i think the sound is pretty much relative to the player.

I put a pair of DiMarzio Virtual Vintage pups in one of my tele's and they're nice sounding pickups. They're also quiet.

I put Kinmans (Woodstock plus)in my 76 Strat to replace the stocks and Dimarzio SDS-1 in the bridge and love em! Wish I had put them in my 62 Ri Tele instead of the Fender Noiseless. Maybe next time.

The Lawrence Black label Vintage tele pickups are the best I've ever tried. The bridge pickup has lots of twang without ever getting shrill, the neck pickup has tons of warmth and body, but is still clear and bright when you need it.

Stew-Mac used to sell them for under $35 (what a bargain!) a couple of years ago, but I haven't seen them in their catalog lately.

(these pups are not made by "the real" Bill Lawrence company, but those other guys who claim the rights to the Lawrence name).
