It's nice to be back on the island...well, not Hawaii, but Fire Island...where men are men and the deer are nervous Image

Here are more photos of last weekend's excellent adventure....

Image

Chris Kennison turning in a fine set with vocals. Chris did an outstanding job on his homemade steel, S8 complete with Trilogy bridge for multiple tunings. Gerald Ross with his guitar that he left out in the rain. Image

Duke Ching with Jeff Au Hoy and Julie "Haunani" Waters also on uke & vocals.
[This message was edited by HowardR on 23 October 2004 at 12:30 PM.]

You won't find a better group of talented musicians than these gentlemen....

Derek Mau, Bobby Ingano, Herbert Hanawahine (who always seemed to be followed by that talking foliage you see behind him), Duke Ching, Jeff Au Hoy, & Kamaka Tom.

Gerald Ross on finger style guitar & burgers. He performed wonderful renditions of Have It You Way, You Deserve a Break Today, Hold The Pickles, Hold the Lettuce, and Hats the Way Ah Huh, Ah Huh I like It. Image Image Image

Seriously, Gerald is quite an accomplished guitarist who plays EVERYTHING. Great steel also. His solo finger style CD has been on heavy rotation in my player all week.
[This message was edited by HowardR on 22 October 2004 at 10:14 PM.]

and of course, Curly's favorite tune that he sang while dusting..."She was bred in old Kentucky, but she's just a crumb down here"......

And now back to our irregularly scheduled program.....

It was really something that almost everyone was proficient on several instruments, going from steel to bass, to guitar to uke. I'm sure if there was a glockenspiel there....

And as the sunsets on the swaying palm trees and this thread, I'd like to end on a serious note....and that's a tough note for me to hit.

I like to say hi, and Aloha to all of the members I met and especially to Wally Pfeifer and Maurie Junod who made me feel most welcome,....er, velcome, right Maurie? Image

As wonderful of a weekend and convention that is was, I was also happy to return to the Big dirty Apple and smoke a couple of cigars.......

Howard there is something wrong with your camera.

Look at the picture of me playing steel at the jam session... What's that flesh colored patch on top of my head??? As you know, I have a full head of thick bushy hair. Why didn't it show up in the shot?

I've noticed this on other peoples pictures of me as well. I think digital photography is to blame. When I look at pictures taken of me 25 years ago using real film, the hair shows up. Now with digital I keep getting that flesh patch. Image

Hi Rick and Howard,

Thanks for the kind words. I try to greet
each of the new comers personally, however,
I did miss B0b. Howard, I see that you caught him in a snapshot though.

Looking back to my first HSGA conventions
there were many members who made it a point
to greet me and to give me encouragement. I
was so impressed by their acceptance of me
that I joined forces with them early on to
become a greeter and sometimes mentor to new
conventioneers.

This forum has created unlimited
opportunities for the members to meet and
interact with each other to form lifelong
bonds. I feel that I am a part of that. So
much more so since we have met face to face
during the convention.

Maurie
