Latest issue of TapeOp (Nov/Dec 2005) printed a review of the Brad's Steel Guitar Black Box. Here are some hi-lights, written by Pete Weiss:
"During a recent session....I hooked up the band's pedal steel player with the SGBB. He flipped. ...his pickup was noticeably more responsive...like you could 'feel' the notes a little better. ...not louder, not driven, just more present...."
"...Later, I tried the device out with a few conventional guitars. Same kind of results: more presence, improved feel. The tone was strong and not overly colored. It just sounded like the guitar and amp were perfectly matched."
"...All in all, it's a great tool to have kicking around the studio or as part of a stellar guitar rig."
BTW, TapeOp is a really cool (and FREE) magazine, if you are into reading interviews with contemporary producers and recording engineers, some of the latest studio gear, and best of all: interviews with record industry pioneers.

Hi Chris, thanks for the tip on the magazine. I just signed up for the magazine. I am also thinking about Brad's Black Box for my guitar in the studio. Where could I get more info on it? Thanks

Notice they tried it with regular guitars and loved the results also. I've long been thinking that Brad should build a regular-guitar version, if nothing else stop calling it the "Steel-Guitar Black Box" and call it the Electric Guitar Black Box, or something like that. I know regular electric guitars would get the same tone benefits, and by aiming it at steel guitar Brad is overlooking a big market... |

I just played bass on a little demo.
Half african Juk, and half blues rock.
I used the SGBB and with right into the little mixer. No eq nothing by SGBB and bass.
Sounded great didn't even think of touching recorder eq, just used what came out..
I have an Avalon U5 DI box that I love,
But now I am actually thinking about a 2nd SGBB...
to go with 1st BB and the Revelation for my bass before the Avalon...
DRAT not AGAIN>>> |

Hey thanks Chris. We were thrilled that TapeOp wanted to do a review. I've been a big TapeOp fan since they started. That review was a tremendous honor.
Jim, regarding the name of the box, I have thought long and hard about the name and wondered if it's limiting to call it the "Steel Guitar" black box since it's equally useful for guitar, bass, acoustic pickups, keyboards, drum machines, console inserts, etc. We've got the name "Steel Guitar Black Box" trademarked and I always liked the uniqueness of that identity. I'm a steel fanatic and like to think that there's something extra special about steel and steel players. My hope is that as non-steel players discover the SGBB and it's many other uses, maybe they'll think that the steel connection makes it extra cool, like a secret weapon or something. You make a great point and I've mulled it over many times. But I just like seeing the name "Steel Guitar" on it too much to change, especially at this point. I haven't overlooked that market though. As a pre-effects-pedals buffer for guitarists, and also for fixing that brittleness of acoustic pickups, it really does seem to be catching on.
David, let me know when that pre gets to Thailand.
Thanks Gary
Bob, I'll check the site. We are indeed IN stock at this point. (Jan 16, 2006). They do take us a few days to turn an order around. My wife and I hand build every single one as the orders come in. They're a bit labor intensive, hence the time factor.
Thanks for all the support guys. And thanks especially to bOb for this fantastic forum. I couldn't have done this steel gear makin' thing without the help of the community that's gathered here. Thanks bOb!!!
