I just bought an amp that has a switch for that.What is that all about.To most of you this
will sound like a dumb question so i will admit
that i am a dummy.

The transformer should be matched with the speaker impedance. Some amps, typically amp heads, have different transformer taps with a selection switch, so they are versatile and can be used with various kinds of speakers and speaker systems. Find out the impedance of your speaker, and set the switch accordingly.
