Back to Basics

Post by Dan Sliter »

How many steelers are going back to the basics just a amp and maybe a delay.
I played this last weekend and i did'nt feel like taking a lot with me so i just took my nashville 112 and a delay unit and to my suprise i liked it and i will not take a bunch of garb with me anymore.Of course i will have the Hilton pedal,Nashville 112,delay stomp box, dont need anything else.

My usual setup is just a Williams pot pedal and my little Boogie amp. Sometimes I hook up the Rotosphere in the effects loop for a little variety. Simple is good.

The other night I played to a crowd of about 600 people without an amp! I ran into a POD XT, and from that direct into the PA. I monitored the main mix with headphones (I was running the PA).

It was really interesting to play with no amps on stage. When I took off the headphones to play marimba, I realized that the stage volume was actually quieter than what I'd been listening to in the phones. Band happy, crowd happy, b0b happy! Image

Since this is about what electronic gear we carry, I'm moving it to the "Electronics" section of the Forum.

I've been using a NV112, and a POD XT. It's more than adequate for anywhere I work. I haven't used my rack stereo system for almost a year.

I only use the POD XT for effects only (I don't use the amp or speaker modeling) and primarliy reverb/delay. The POD XT saves carrying a big rack effects processor or several "stomp boxes" and it's clean!

I did use two NV112's at our steel guitar club show this past Saturday - mainly because I wanted to hear how two 112's sounded.

My little Boogie, a Maverick prototype with a 12" Tone Tubby (ceramic), is sort of the tube equivalent of a Nashville 112. It's 40 watts.

I don't need a delay unit. The Boogie reverb tank provides enough wetness and it sounds just great.

Mullen > Hilton Digital Sustain > Goodrich Pot Pedal > Fender Steel King.

I have an itty bitty Guyatone Micro Delay that I insert into the f/x patch and add a bit of delay on slow songs. It is subtle enough that I could probably do without it.

I was using a Lexicon MPX-100 for reverbs and a second unit for delays, but the Steel King has a wonderful reverb in it. Now I can leave the rack at home.

I think of "basics" as only a cord between the guitar and the amp.

20 years ago or so, I played one instrument (electric guitar) through a whole string of pedals. Now I play a whole string of instruments through one pedal (Rivera BufIV buffer/splitter), when I play out.

At home I use lots of electronics.

Yeah, I saw Leonard T. Zinn do that, and without pedals too. Incredible tone!

He didn't even use a chair. I figure that his secret must be in his brand of shoes or something. Image<font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by b0b on 20 September 2005 at 11:21 AM.]</p></FONT>

With me it's my push-pull,Hilton, either my Twin or my Evans depending on room and stage size. Sometimes if space is an issue I use my old Bud pedal so I don't get tangled up in the Hilton power cord.

Is the Goodrich L10K a light-beam pedal.
I tried one once, couldn't get even a half-decent tone, and went back to my pot pedal.

The L10K (and H10K) both have a battery powered impedance buffer, very similar to the Goodrich Matchbox without the tone control, but it is a pot pedal (uses a 10K not 500k).

I like it... and the battery lasts so long you forget it has one.
