I went to get my PA speaker cabs from the attic yesterday and to my surprise the mice have expropriated some of the felt like covering from 2 of the cabinets. Guess they liked the color and thought it would go with their furniture. Hope the little creatures were nice and warm and comfy.
Anyway, the material is similar in composition to what Emmons uses to cover their steel guitar cases. It's a grey felt like cloth material. Does anyone know what the material is called and where I can buy some? Looks like two of the cabinets will need to be completely recovered.
PS: this was supposed to be in "Electronics" but some how ended up in "Music". Moderator feel free to relocate if needed. Don't know what I screwed up...[This message was edited by Ray Minich on 25 July 2005 at 07:46 AM.] |

I have mice teeth marks on some of my mike cables. They chewed the black insluation, but stopped at the braid.
No mice anymore.
Moving to ELECTRONICS... |

That is not Tolex. Tolex is the vinyl type covering. What you have is the "carpet" covering. You can buy it at www.partsexpress.com they have several colors and grades. It's where I get mine for various speaker and case projects. |

Nice reptile Joey, what is it?
Yeah, found the material (cabinet carpet) at Parts Express. Jack and Ken thanks for the help and the website. Now, they've got two kinds, one is latex backed ($5/yd), the other is not ($3/yd). Any recommendations pro or con for the latex backing?
I'm gonna start letting my two cats roam the attic from now on. My wife would freak out over a snake, but, then again, maybe...[This message was edited by Ray Minich on 25 July 2005 at 12:23 PM.] |

Just be glad your PA doesn't have any foam-surround speakers - it turns out that dust-mites enjoy munching on the foam's lubricant - pretty soon you notice that the speaker surrounds are all dried up and disinegrating with no use at all. No fun at all if you have to recone all your JBL 18" subs.
On a related note, we had a big expensive problem at a major auto race last year when rabbits chewed through the fiber-optic cables carrying the video and audio back to the network TV truck from about half of the track - apparently they found the outer casing of the fiber lines to be very tasty. |

Most, plastic, rubber, and foam contain "urea", an organic compound that is produced in bodies of mammals (and usually expelled). Urea is also synthesized and used in making, in addition to plastic, animal feed.
So, in essence, plastic smells like food to many animals. One of the biggest problems on my farm is gophers/dogs/coyotes chewing through my drip irrigation lines.
I like Joey's remedy, we've got a few of those roaming about. A big one scared the %#$? out of my wife a couple weeks ago. |

Ray, I buy the latex type, a little more rugged. Just depends on what you want. |

Ray,
Check out some of the various automotive carpets. I have found some of them to be basically the same material you speak of. Over the years I have build several musical cabinets and the stuff works great when applied using contact cement.

The folks who make the spray-on rubber liner coating for pickup beds also market it as a brush-on product for sound equipment, etc. If you're interested I can look for the info they sent me. |

Thanks all for the info and the recommendations. Dave, thanks for the assistance but I'm gonna pass on the Rhino Lining for now, I can just see me with urethane goop all over me and none on the cabinets
Thanks again. I'll let y'all know how I make out with the material. |

Ray, I have a buddy that does the spray on bed liners. You can take something to them, and they'll spray it for you. I have a rack case that was done that way. VERY durable. |
