Today I was awed by some great (and really awesome) steel playing at a concert featuring Eric Bibb along with the Campbell Brothers. Darick Campbell played what looked to be a SIERRA single neck steel, his brother Chuck played a pedal...(couldn't make out the brand). If you folks have never experienced these two great musicians, you are in for a real treat. Their music is basically jazz-gospel (non-Hawaiian). They play a style which can only be described as "their own" ! I was especially impressed with their beautiful duet on "Amazing Grace" which I have never heard played before as they played it. Their playing defies description...ya just gotta go and hear them ! It made one suddenly realize just how far the steel guitar can go in music. If they ever come to your area, don't miss their show. |

I believe that the Campbell brothers offer some of the best steel guitar playing today. I caught most of their show in Banff the night before last. I was blown away by how they worked together to create huge grooves and their amazing virtuosity. I found Darick Campbell (lap steel player)'s solos in "End of My Journey" and "A Change is Gonna Come" so moving. Such beautiful touch with his ring finger for volume and tone swells too!
The pedal steel player was Jason (a cousin of the brothers), and was subbing for Chuck this weekend. I was really impressed by his playing too.
I left the concert with feelings of awe and inspiration, and gratitude to the Campbell brothers for their beautiful music!

I'm glad to hear you folks enjoyed the Campbells at Banff. Chuck Campbell wasn't there because he was in Washington, DC receiving the National Heritage Fellowship--our nation's highest honor for traditional artists--for his artisic excellence and role in shaping the "sacred steel" tradition. He and Jerry Douglas brought the house down as they closed the Friday night concert. Chuck says he and Jerry will be planning some recording projects together. Stay tuned...

I saw the Campbell Brothers play at Joe's Pub in NYC two years ago. Absolutely wonderful playing, one of the very best live shows I've ever seen, any style. The best part was how quickly the NYC hip thing (it's a very hip room) faded once the music started. It was way too exciting for anything but screaming and jumping up and down. |

I second what has been said. Last night's show was spectacular in every way, and the sound in the Arden Theatre couldn't have been better. During one of the last numbers a young guy came out and sat in on Chuck's steel - I take it that was probably Jason. |

Both Chuck and Darrick are amazing dobro players. I watched chuck play dobro at the Port Townsend Blues Festival (one of the first times he ever played the instrument) and watched as a room full of dobro players stood there with their mouths hanging open.
