I agree with Bobby that speakers also play a major role in shaping a good distorted tone. I'm heavily biased in favour of Celestion speakers, but that's only because I grew up listening to heavy rock, which is built around sound of Marshall amp stacks. Even when playing PSG 'clean' I still like the sound of the Celestion Vintage 30 in my little 112 combo.

Don't even try to play with a distortion sound. That effective makes the Steel sound like #$%^ !!

Be a Steel Player, Enhance the singer,do a turnaround that makes the front-man (singer) think you made his song the best song of the gig !!!
