Are these units both amp modlers with effects? which is best for both steel guitar and 6 string?

Two different units. The Profex II is a preamp/effects processor, but no amp or speaker modeling. The Pod XT has extensive amp and speaker modeling.

The Profex II was discontinued around 1995/96, the Pod XT is a current production unit.
