Topic: 10" speaker recommendations |

I just got a great deal on a Fender Vibroverb reissue (the '63 one with 2X10" speakers). The amp sounds great, but the speakers (stock) are nothing to write home about. What 10" speakers do you guys like? I'm probably going to put two disssimilar speakers in there. I want as much bottom end as possible, and efficiency is good (I want to be able to use this as a pedal steel amp in a pinch). JBL? EV? Jenson? Weber? ??

I've got a practice rack system that I'm using a single 10" Eminence BP102 with. It's a bass speaker so it should give you some of that bottom you're looking for. Never tried two of them together though. The single doesn't sound bad at lower volumes. Never tried really pushing it. I believe it's rated at 200 watts/8 ohms.

You can't lose with a Weber. The California series for big, clean tone, and the vintage series for some grind.
They are the closest thing to Vintage Jensen, and D Series JBL's that you'll find on the planet. www.webervst.com
And dont be afraid to email Ted for advice on speaker choice for your situation. He's always there to answer questions, usually within 24 hours.

Dan, if you can find a pair of EV EVM10 speakers, if they will fit in the amp, if you can lift it, you'll never look back.
Avoid the JBL 10" speakers as they are way too shrill, nothing like the JBL 12 and 15s.
The Eminence is a good choice. Consider the Eminence Delta-Lite 2510 also.

Thanks for the information, folks! I read that Weber has an EV like 10" speaker, that sounds interesting. I'm looking for a fat low end more than sparkly highs. I have played a Super with all 10" JBLs and that was painful.

| Dan--the EV-like Weber would be the Michigan. I have no experience with it. I do hae a pair of Calis in a 2x10 cab. Never really had a chance to use it or break them in--got sidetracked with other stuff. But my first observation was that with this particular Genz-Benz hybrid cab--half open, half closed back--there is a ton of thump out of these speakers. Too much, in fact, and I will eventually change out one of the speakers from the closed chamber with something with less bottom. Hey Dan,
I really like the Reverend tone 10-30's and they are priced right to. They sound nice and phat and just a little spongy on the bottom. So great for blues, and roots. They now make a newer model 10-25's that have a tighter bottom end (less spongy) that sound nice to. They are just not as shrill as the Jensen P10R's that I had, nor the Mojo Tone P10rs which are a modified Jensen style speaker.
oops forgot to add, great for 6 string and lap steels, not positive if they would be clean enough for PSG, but I doubt the amp would be either if it is the 40 watter. I use the above speakers in my super reverb and was able to use all four the same. I did not have to mix and match to get a full sound. I pay around 50 bucks a pair for them all the time on ebay.

I have a "new" 410 HD 130 in white pinwale that has 4 each 10" EV speakers. I never use the amp as it was given to me by Leo when Music Man closed its doors. Willie Nelsons group uses this model amp and I was contacted by Ernie Ball asking me if I was interested in selling my amp to Willie. I couldnt let it go.
I feel that 10" speakers move more air than 12's..only my opinion..One of Music Man's most popular selling amps was the 210HD 130 which was a killer of an amp.
I presently own in addition to the 410HD 150 is a 212HD 150 with Altec 417 12" speakers that weigh a ton. But what a sound. I have an extension cab with 2 Altec 417 12" speakers if the occasion arises. These are great speakers. My amps were modified by Leo Fender shortly before he became ill and sold the company. Spangler's comment you'll never look back,,,why? because I advise no one to stand behind an amp with those speakers..It has the effect of a "scud missle" |

| I got Delta-lite 15" in Marrs cabinet. It's verrry even sounding from top to the bottom. So for me, to make this sound a little closer to say, JBL, I need to push up Treble on amp to "Fake" that bright sound. Actually, JBL is the one "Faking" it to make us hear it "bright" by scooping off the mid. Anyway, I too am also interested in 10" Delta-lite. it's 40hz to 3.5k hz( same as 15" one), and most of speakers we like cuts off around 5k. I don't know that means anything...Anyone with 10" Delta-lite??? |

If you are going for the rock sound,you can't go wrong with Celestion Greenbacks. I have them in my Marshall 410 (1965B)for guitar and they sound great for the blues/rock style.

I 3rd the motion on the EVM10s. Those speakers sound amazing with just about any kind of instrument close range, and take a real beating.
I use a pair of EV cabinets with the EVMs and a n EV tweeter in each for one of my rigs and, with my Pod, my sound is great and I never want for any more power. That is in a re-miking situation, though. Wouldn't want to use them if that was all I was playing through.

I go with Ken on the Eminence line(s) of speakers for the variety that you get...There are speakers for just about any application ....
The older JBL's are VERY brite and not what I would want in an amp ....
The EV's are great sounding speakers , but come with no Chiropractic warranty...
Overall for tone, variety, price , and weight, I would go with one of the Eminence speakers.....Jim
