the sound is coming thru a paper towel tube?
I'm being completely serious, have tinkered with different settings on my amp, don't want to use effects either.
my amp is a little Crate 15. I have low,mid,and high equalization knobs, a "clean" level knob, and a reverb knob. Then there is this "overdrive" toggle switch, but it's more for distortion.
I would like to get a very piercing/cutting honky tonk sound out of it, I'm just stuck in the mud right now.
Any suggestions?

| Hello Kenny, It is difficult to get a good steel sound out of a small, guitar practice amp. Try turning the midrange eq mostly off. Turn up the highs 1/2 to 3/4 of the way on. Turn the low eq up 1/2 to 3/4 of the way, then down some if it is too muddy. Keep the distortion channel turned off. Then go down to your local Peavey dealer and pick up a Nashville 112 if you can't get the sound you're looking for. Good luck, and have fun. Larry J. |

| If you can find a way to patch in an equalizer with about 20 to 31 or more bands per channel, you could drop out everything lower that 300 hz, and everything above 3000 hz, (tinkering with the edges) and it will sound like a typical telephone channel, which may approximate the effect yer lookin' for. |

Turn the mids up to about 3/4 of their range, then turn the bass and treble down to about 1/4 of their range. Now, lay the amp face down on a table, and play away.

thanks for the help everyone--I like the sound I'm getting with the low and high up and the mid pretty much non-existant and my reverb 3/4.

i have a zum with a vegas 400 it is more of a steel amp. i dont' think that a crate is good for steel but thats my oppinion. i have seen nashville 400 on here for a couple hundred. there are many amps to choose from. some like mine are heavy so i put rollers on the bottom so i could roll it along where ever i go. thanks doc

sorry to be so blunt
I'm not certain a piercing honky tonk sound can be accomplished with the 15 watt Crate..
Some folks use two Nashville 400's and are still seeking the piercing honky tonk sound..

Kenny I'm up the road from you in Talladega.
I have the NV400, Vegas 400, and the NV112 and I like the NV112 better than the others.
I think the only way to solve your dilema is to get one of the above, in my opinion. I've used others but didn't really care for any of them.
I go to Auburn frequently to see my in-laws. Give me a holler and maybe we can get together and pick a little bit.

Kenny, I have a couple of extra amps, one is a Peavey Session 400,chrome corners and looks and sounds like new, Just back from Peavey, they checked it out and put in new whatever it needed and a new power cord. I'll take $300.00 plus shipping if you dont find something else. It is a great amp, just dont need it,got a new Evans. Keep pickin, it gets better every day.
