Over the past thirty five years of playing lap style guitar I’ve had the pleasure of owning many Nationals, Dobro’s and Weissenborn instruments. Of all these very fine instruments I can honestly say none have given me more pleasure than my more recently acquired “Celtic Cross” Weissenborn by Neil Russell of Victoria, B.C. This mahogany instrument has the bottom end of a Cello and a sparkling treble, an absolute joy to play.
The only trouble with this instrument is that it sounds so dam good, I’ve had to order another. Neil’s putting together some baritone instrument’s this fall and I’m lucky enough to be number three on his list. These baritones will have a thirty inch scale length and will be 15% larger over all, string gauges .017 to .080. My present Weissenborn is tuned to C and I’m hoping I can take this shape down to G (GDGDGB), I like this shape as it keeps the third well out of the way. I understand David Lindley uses this G tuning on his baritone Weissenborn but I have no idea of the scale length he is using?
There’s some pretty outrageous pricing out there on custom Weissenborns and I’m not willing to pay the extra for a celebrity endorsement. We’re lucky there are still a few Luthiers like Neil around that are building high quality custom instruments at realistic prices. Bill

Hey, cool, that's good to hear. I remember talking with Neil last year about baritone Weissenborn copies, and he seemed pretty into it. I'm very curious to see how they turn out (maybe he'll make one and ship it to Rufus Guitar Shop...).
