| I need to get an inexpensive small recorder of some kind (tape, MP3?) and mic to tape new songs at rehearsals so that I can practice them at home. I don't need high quality sound or multiple tracks. I just need to be able to put the mic in the middle of the room to capture something I can play along with at home. I don't have a computer in my music room, so if it is not tape, I need to be able to patch the device into a mixer or receiver to play it back. Does anyone have any advice on recorders and mics for this? |

Even with all the advanced electronic equipment available today, I still find a small cassette recorder very valuable. If I want to tape a rehearsal I just bring along my little Panasonic that takes regular sized cassettes and press "record". These cassette player/recorders and the cassettes they use are still available at Radio Shack and some Pharmacy stores like Walgreen's, Sav On, etc., for about $25.

HAve you looked into the portable Sony Mini Discs The newer ones have 4X (MDLP4)compression, so using a 80 minute Disc, you can get 320 minutes of record time. They are also eraseable and have CD quality sound and NO TAPE NOISE

The minidisk recorders are pretty handy and sound halfway decent for compressed digital audio.

I like the Zoom Palm-02. It is a digital 3 track recorder about the size of a pack of cigaretts. It records to smart memory cards which are reusable & doubles as my headphone/practice amp. It has several good sounding effects (I just can't practice without reverb) & even has several complete backing tracks for practice with a band. Input & headphone jacks are 1/4"(no adapters necessary)& has a good quality condenser mic built in.
The downside is, it eats batteries, but I use mine with an ac adapter without batteries & never have to worry about them. You can find these things on ebay, like I did, for about $100.00.
