Is a Sho~Bud Single Channel amp looking for a 4 ohm speaker, or an 8 ohm? And how does a neophyte find out?

Good question Herb.
I have been afraid to try a 4 ohm in mine, It runs pretty hot with the 8 ohm, I think a 4 ohm may be a little too much. Let's hear from the "experts".

I wouldn't even think about putting a 4 ohm speaker in a ShoBud amp. The power amp in those things are a time bomb waiting to go off if anything is disturbed in the load or if they are driven too hard.

A Good move is to Change the output transistors to 2N3773. This should be done by a qualified Tech only, because an adjustment has to be made to the idle current as with any output transistor Change. The 2N 3773 Transistor has a much higher Collector Current rating and is a heavy duty mod for these amps. I have done this mod to ShoBud and Evans amps. This is a realiability mod, doesn't agffect the sound or tone. Only after doing this mod would I ever consider a 4 ohm speaker and then I would be very careful with it.
