David, with that setup, the effect of the Black Box would be more subtle. Because there you've got the clean buffer stage and the tube amp warmth. But there is still a unique sound when the pickup gets to directly interact with a tube, before any other active devices. There's a tonal, harmonic and dynamic difference. I can't say whether you'd prefer that difference or not in that particular setup. If you're in Dallas, I'll try and let you mess around with one so you can see what it's all about.

Thanks,
Brad

Hi Brad, read about your black box, sounds great for the steel, what is the difference between yours and the ones shown in Musicians Friend cat., the Tube MP studioV3 or the tube MP OPL? I am no electical whizz so let me know please.

David D. One way to test if you like the sound of your pick-up direct to a tube stage is play without your pedal direct in to your amp...
at an appropriate volume of course.

If you hear a cool increase in harmonic structure in your amp, then a SGBB would likely help reproduce the same effect before the Hilton.
We're talking TONE here, so there are MANY individual subjective things only you can decide.

If the change is un-noticable or negligable, then you have a really nice set up already.
Lucky you! Image

The Hilton is a great pedal and passes the best you can output to your amp, but it doesn't have that direct interaction of pick-up and TUBE that Brad's box gives.
The Hilton would pass the interaction of the pickup and SGBB to your amp perfectly at any volume you like..
