Given a Fostex VF16 that can export wav files, one per track, what PC software would you recommend for the following tasks:
import 2 to 16 wav files(tracks), edit as needed, apply either vst or active-X effects to individual tracks as needed, mix down to stereo, output wav stereo.
There is no need to record, or use more than 24 tracks. Mixdown automation would be a nice plus.

My buddy near Boston has been using SONAR to good effect.
~I chcked it out when I was there, It does 90% of what I need. He's not an engineer, but gets effective results with it.
I use Protools & Digital Performer, they do ALL that I need, but they don't do VST.
Don't forget what you monitor with is as, or even more important, than what you mix with.
You can do a great no effects, dry mix with great monitors,
but all the toys in the world won't help if you're not hearing things properly. |

For the money, SONAR.
Great program with a pretty good user interface.

Check into Adobe Audition as well. Formerly known as Cool Edit Pro.

| Check into Vegas by Sonic Foundry (recently eaten by Sony)... It's their multi-track version of Sound Forge which I have used for several years. Great tools IMHO. |
