Peavey Guitar Question

Saw a Peavey Telecaster type guitar at a pawn shop with what looked like two Joe Barden pickups installed. I'm thinking of buying it and swapping parts out with other teles if they are authentic Joe B's since the price of the guitar is less than a couple of pickups would be.

Did Peavey Tele's ever come with Joe Bardens or maybe they had a pickup design that copied them? I don't know anything about Peavey Guitars.

Peavey pickups have been designed in house. We have never used third party pickups.

I have three Peavey guitars...2 teles and a Falcon. They are the most UNDERATED guitars out there. Mine have maple necks, alder bodies and beat the #@*!! out of Fender for quality and sound...they are American made, good o'l USA.
You can find them on ebay quite frequently. Look for Peavey Reactor (tele version) or Peavey Falcon (strat version).

Here's a link to a Reactor guitar for sale on eBay that has the same pickups as the one I saw. That makes me think these are Peavey pickups and not Joe Bardens althought they look just like them.

Hello Shaan

If the pickups look like the ones in the ebay Reactor, chances are great that they are the Peavey stock pickup. In this case the pickup is a double blade humbucker which was used in the Reactor AX version. Peavey also made a later model Reactor (not AX) which uses a single coil pickup like the ones Fender uses.

The Bill Lawerence(Pennsylvina Co.) makes a double blade humbucking pickup that looks very similar to the Peavey AX stock pickup. The original Bill Lawerence (Califorina Co.) also makes a single blade humbucking pickup that is used alot in telecasters and Strats.

I own a Reactor and it is one of the best playing guitars that I own and I own two Fender Tele's. But, my main guitar right now is one that we never introduced called a TRIUMPH. The band that I play in has two other guitarists, so now I play steel much more. But, the two guitarists both use Tele's and I didn't want to sound just like them, so I started using my Triumph and it is one fine instrument. It has two "soapbar" pickups and gets a great tone/sound when using a Peavey Classic 100 amp with a 410 cab. I love it!

We only made a few of these guitars though.

Thanks for the info guys, I just bought a '57 reissue MIJ Tele last week so I guess I'll hold off on this one. I sure love my new gee-tar!

I have 3 Peavey guitars, a natural finish T-60, a natural finish T-40 bass, and a white Dyna-Bass. I love these guitars! Tom is right, these ARE the best playing guitars around. I have a Gibson LP Classic, a Guild X-170 Manhattan, and a Gibson ES-335DT, but my favorite all-round player is the T-60. With the split-coil pups and the phase switch, you can get just about any kind of tone you want out of the T-60.

I gotta chime in here, I've been playing Peavey guitars for over 20 years, and they are great. My two main american made guitars are a Falcon (strat type) and a Generation S-3, which is a maple top 3 pickup tele type. I am a Peavey dealer - but found these on e-bay very cheap. I get TONS of compliments on these two guitars for both tone and playability. The current US made Limited series are killer strat type guitars and the Cropper is a great tele type guitar. The Wolfgangs are great too - Peavey has alway been a VERY under-rated guitar mfg. Check them out! Their current import stuff is some of the best stuff out there too! Mike, tell me more about your "rare" peavey guitar...

As an owner of a sunburst T-60 and past owner of a black T-40, they truly are an incredible value. The late Phil Baugh played one for years with a MSA pedal setup and Steve Wariner also played a Peavey for a long time and many others and are indeed very underrated.
