A humbucking pickup is probably what is best, but it will not fit a Tele.

A versitile effects unit is probably a better investment at this stage of his playing.

Check out a Line6 POD Ver2. It has great guitar distortions, Classic to Modern.

Since the POD-XT has been introduced, the price of the POD Ver2 has fallen greatly.

The XT is perfered by Steelers, but I've heard it said that the ver2 has better guitar distortions.

As a bonus (for you) it has a Headphone Jack.

your looking for a hot pick up rather than a mild one...try a demarzzio hot rail or any of the other hot rails out there...they are a stacked humbucker and fit a tele perfectly without any mods needed
