I've just bought a Session 500 and am having a ball finding out just how nice my Guitar can sound compared to (no brand names!) what I've been using.
However I am having trouble getting any reasonable sound from the String Effect. It sounds like good Lead Guitar /Heavy Metal distortion, not violins!
I am using the 3 patch chord system for the Volume Pedal, have read the Manual, and have tried all EQ variations that I can think of.
My question is either .....
a)Is there something else I should Know?
b) Who is/are the authorised dealers in Victoria,Australia who could do the necessary maintenance to fix the problem?
Thanks in advance
Michael

I could be entering into trouble here, but that IS the proper functionality of the string effect.

It would work with Severed Head In A Bag. |

Jesse,
the way I understand it is that the method employed is distortion but the effect should emulate sustaining strings.
However I am not always renowned for my understanding!!
I await info from those who understand these things.
Earnest,
at the moment it makes me sound like S.H.I.A.B.!!

I don't know anyone that ever got a decent string sound from the Session 500. I didn't even like the sound of it for a fuzz tone. |

These guys are right. That old "distortion created" string effect was never much good! Enjoy the amp for what it does well...loud and clean! |

Well, here goes................
The Session 500 string effect was/is intended to emulate single notes being played on a fiddle via steel guitar. Remember that this amp was designed back in the early '80's when the phase shifter effect was relatively new. Opinions change on what effects sound better than others. I remember hearing a Merle Haggard song with a strong phase shifter effect on it and I thought it was worst effect that I have ever heard, and still do. As I said, the string effect was intended to emulate single fiddle notes. I personally never have liked the sound of it, but apparently there was enough requests for that type of sound in a steel guitar amp to warrant using the feature on the Session 500.
Michael, if I had to guess I would say that this effect was working properly on your amp. It is either on or off and no "in-betweens". I guess that in addition to the weight of the Session 500, the string effect would be the second thing that I didn't like about that amp. But, I will say that those players who own a Session 500 love the sound of it.

Maybe this will help some, though I personally have not tried it.

Thankyou all for your advice.
Mike,
You're not wrong about the weight. I bought a trolley the day after I bought the amp! I'll continue to experiment with the String Effect. Apart from that I must say that the sound is, as Donny said, loud and clean.
Terry,
Thanks for the link. I'll see what happens.

I too have just purchased a 500 and so far love it,as Donnie said...Loud and clean, the string effect and the phase leave a lot to be desired, otherwise a killer amp.(if it were about 40# lighter)
