Topic: Best pickups with FX? |

Do some types of pickups work better with FX units than others? I will be buying a new pickup soon for my Fessy S12U (either a BL 912 or a True Tone). I will also be getting some kind of FX unit (possibly a POD XT), mostly for fuzz/distortion for playing blues. Will humbuckers and single coils work equally well with FX units? I have Nashville 400 amp and a Hilton volume pedal. Thanks for any experience on this.

I have had better luck with the BL 910's for FX than single coils.In my experience single coils tend to squeal if you crank them up with overdrive. BL pickups are dead quiet also which is a plus if you are putting gizmos in your signal chain.

| I would agree with Bob on this one...When running effects with guitar or steel, it's preferable to have a strong, clean, signal....Any humbucking pickup by nature will give you that ...Single coils will work also, but any effect that will be boosting your pickup, will also boost the noise of the pickup.....Jim |

I use exclusively single coils and have not had any trouble with feedback using overdrive or any other effects. I just don't care for the tone of the BL910 compared to the TrueTone. I've done the A/B comparison and it's dramatic. Bob's right, the BL pickups are quiet -- virtually silent -- but to my ear there's something missing compared to a sgl coil. Just my opinion.

| I have a guitar that is just for working with the rack and it has EMG pickups. Which are too clean and too pure (read: no character), but with addition of the tone circuit will cut through a rack of boxes and come out sounding like a steel guitar. Antime I've cut tracks with my favorite guitar, single coil pickups, I have to clean them up with a de-noise plug in. |

My favorite for the distortion channel of my Mesa/Boogie amps is the George L's 12-1. It also works real nice with the H&K Rotoshere the phase shifter in the Lexicon MPX-100.
I have a George L's 10-1 in my Sierra Laptop (8 string lap steel). It drive effects real well, too.
