Peterson V-SAM...Update

I spoke to John Norris today by phone-he is not quite ready yet for me to bring a guitar down for testing it out-it should only be another week or two-one of the things they are currently still working on is a clamp for the unit to attach to the steel guitar leg-I gather that this unit may be heavier on the leg than say for instance my Match-Bro and they are using something other than the plastic type of piece that we are accustomed to using (like on Goodrich Products) for the application

I'm considering getting a VS-1. What makes the V-SAM better suited for PSG? I was under the impression that the VS-1 would be more tuner than I would ever need.

I am waiting for the V-SAM because I will be able to store custom temperments for my guitar. You can not do that with the VS-1. With it you are locked into standard tuning (or other preset temperments not applicable to the steel guitar) and making adjustments for each string as you tune. Even using the Newman charts, I found they were not suited that well to my Sierra Steel (U12). The Newman settings are a good starting place for my steel. Once I get the instrument temper tuned I will then record the settings and build a custom temperment in the V-SAM. This will be a much less cumbersome method to tune with. It sounds like it will do the trick! I tried a VS-1 and really do like the display. The one thing I did not like was that the backlight needed to be brighter. I called Peterson and the rep told me the V-SAM would have a brighter display, as that has already been an issue. We also talked about the need for a holder that can attach to leg of the steel. It was difficult to hold the VS-1 and tune. I finally put it on a table beside the steel, as it kept sliding out of my lap!

Ok-we spent the afternoon yesterday at Peterson checking it out-This is a "must have" item for every steel player

Look for me to post a more lengthy review of this great new product within the next few days-it is worth having and worth waiting for because it is going to make tuning more accurate,easier,and faster for all steel players who use one-and it may just standardize a better intonation for all of us

Can you share with us what the preset C6 and E9 tunings are going to be in the V-SAM. How does this differ from the settings you were using with Peterson 520?

LeRoy S-The temperament presets for the E9th and C6th are listed in the instructional manual that comes with the V-SAM-followed by the following notation "Values derived by integrating and expanding upon steel guitar tuning theory and data described by Buddy Emmons,Jeff Newman, and others from various sources"

Basically-John told me that they used the Newman chart with some variation based on their own expertise and research

Martin W-the leg clamp that we are shown using on the Peterson Forum Website is a prototype which so far they only had one of-John Norris tells me that they are going to start making more of them-They will be an accessory at added cost-It is made (adapted) from existing drum kit hardware (for something like a cowbell or wood block) that they must buy from another source and then add a few parts that they fabricate at Peterson to attach to the V-SAM-They wanted something that would be adaptable to attach it to other musical equiptment besides the steel guitar leg such as music stands,microphone stands,etc. Since the V-SAM is slightly larger and heavier(than say my Goodrich Match-Bro)they needed something sturdier than those little plastic "slip-over" clamps that most of us are used to using on gadjets that we attach to the guitar leg

Thanks Paul, I thought that was the case. After doing more reading on the V-SAM ,I see that it comes with its own power supply (wall wart). It sounds like a real time saver when it comes to tuning. Martin.

Martin-yes it does come with AC power supply-The clip on transducer(for acoustics)and the carrying case are extra(as the leg clamp is)
