| Need some opinions on stand alone (economical?) digital recording devices for recording my practice sessions and ????. I saw a small compact Tascam unit on Musicians Friend for around 3-4 hundred bucks. Or would computer software be the way to go? I keep hearing about MIDI and Synth and Cakewalk but don't know the first thing about these things???? Need some discussion! |

There is some really nice recording software for your pc which emulates multi-channel recorders using your existing sound card. I have one called "Multi-Track" which I run on my laptop. I connect my steel or bass guitar directly into the mike jack on the sound card, and connect the output of the sound card into my bass amp. The software costs about $100.00, and the number of tracks you can use depends upon the amount of memory in your pc.
On my website (http://www.wgpeters.com click on music) are some samples that I created with Multi-track recorder and "Band In a Box". I am a beginner at the steel, and as far as vocals go, I'm the bass player in the band, so don't judge the software by my performance.
You can get a trial version of Multi_track at www.multitrackstudio.com which allows only 3 tracks at a time, but shows all the capabilities.
I also have Cake-walk.... too complicated for me.
