Well, I've decided to upgrade my Peavey 50/212. I'm looking for a pair of JBL 12 inch speakers over on buy and sell. I commented that I really didn't know the difference between the E and D series. Cairo Zoots was kind enough to direct me to some info about these.
After reviewing the info, it appears that the E series is almost twice as efficient and has twcie the power handling capability of the D. Is that an accurate assesment?
I'm not interested in distortion in my Peavey.I'm going for deadly clean!!
If I want distortion, I'll use a stomp box or my Vibrolux.
Do the E series speakers seem like a good idea?
Tubes.... I have thousands of hours on the stock tubes. I was looking at the JJ (Tesla) but may spend a little more and get some Phillips. What do you folks think?
Ideas....suggestions?

You're delving into some dangerously subjective areas there son!
My two cents:
The best sounding 6L6GC available today is made by Svetlana. The JJ's are okay but a little too "tubby" or bassy for me. The Phillips 7581s will last longer but I think they're a little harsh on the top end. They are also about twice as expensive as the Svetlanas.
D or K series JBL's sound "nicer" (Smoother, less harsh or brittle on the top end)than the E series. They may not be as efficient as the E's but they're plenty efficient for me! Re-cones can be fine as long as they are done with a true JBL kit by someone who knows what they're doing. |

Thanks CT.... After reading this, I went and did some research. I read some reviews and ratings of different tubes. I am going to go with the Svetlana EL84 and the Electro-Harminix 12AX7.
Speakers.... I'm looking really hard at the Weber California Alnico Series. At $175 a pop, they are not cheap, but certainly not as expensive as the JBL.
I phoned Peavey this morning to ask a question about the stock speakers. I was surprised when Mike Brown answered. Kinda neat! Anyway, he asked me what I'm going for and I replied, really clean... Really though, this is more about just messing around and going for a smoother sound. Us steelers just are not happy unless we are changing something!

Hey Steve,
I've got a bunch of 12ax7 tubes (EH, Tesla, Ei, Mesa, etc.). I'll be glad to send you an assortment of them so you can compare them in your amp. Just send 'em back when you're finished. E-mail me at my address above.

Thanks Mike!
BTW....This is a EL84 power amp. Svetlana does not make a EL84.
