As I recall, the IQ-1200 was supposed to give the steel an "acoustic" sound, especcially when combined with a tweater of somekind.

I was looking at some acoustic guitar amps recently (50W 2-8" speakers with a tweater) and was wondering if these amps would be a good fit for the IQ-1200.

So now that it's been out for a year or 2, what do you users think about this pickup system???

It's a separate pickup (in addition to your normal pickup), with an outboard black box controller, right?

Thx for the info,
Pete

The I-Q 1200 is not a pickup. It is a black box a little larger than a cigarette pack. It contains a coil that changes the effective impedance of your pickup, and a knob that lets you dial in how much change you want. All the way clockwise is putatively no effect. I say putatively since I still hear a tiny effect.

It lets you hear more of what Bill Lawrnce calls treble frequencies (above 5 K which is why Bill suggests using a tweeter) and less of what guitar amp makers call treble (which is 2K to 5K) and Bill Lawrence refers to as undesirable high midrange. Let your ear be the judge.

I-Q 1200 is a passive device (no amp or battery) and it also contains a crossover or frequency divider so that it works on only the high frequencies. Unfortunately, when you dial in the effect, in my opinion there is too much attenutation of everything above 500 Hz or so, and the sound gets very boomy. I could compensate with drastic bass-attenuating settings on my effect box, but that can be a drag. So asked Bill Lawrence what to do about that and he suggested changing the fixed resistor in the crossover to a variable resistor, which I did. It works great.

I-Q 1200 is designed to work with the 710 (712) series of pickups. It also works with my 912, but not as dramatically. On other pickups such as my Barcus-Berry and my George L, it does very little.

I just got an email asking for more specific info on the change I made. I asked Bill & Becky Lawrence what to do and here is the meat of Becky's reponse:
quote:
Bill says to change the resistor over the cap to about 25 kilohm - or even better, use a 100 kilohm variable resistor which will work as a bass
control when the control is in the counter clock position.

Since I tend to pick up the soldering iron by the wrong end, I had someone else put it in .
