I am a new huge fan of the Peavey Black Widow 1501-4 used in a Fender Twin. It seems like such the standard way to go by putting a JBL in a Twin, but man oh man the Black Widow sounds so good with the tubes. I'm a die-hard tube amp guy and have always used JBLs for guitar, steel whatever. The Black Widow has a wider dispersion pattern, easily handles the power, has that sparkle on top like the JBL (probably because of the aluminum dust cap), and generally has a tighter fuller tone. It's like butter. What a speaker!

Glad to hear it, Brad. One reason I have yet to take the Vibrosonic out of the house (aside from the fact that the Evans is half the weight and sounds real good) is that I'm spooked about blowing up the JBL--not sentimental concern--practical concern of being stranded w/o a rig. I'm going to try swapping out speakers.
Any idea if the stock speaker in my 80's Session 400 Ltd is the 1501-4 you're talking about?

I never liked my Vibrosonic for steel until I tried a Black Widow in it. It sounded better than the JBL ever sounded. The only reason that I don't play it out is it's to heavy and even moreso with the Super Structure B/W.

many years ago when I finally decided to get a Peavey after the session 500's had just been released I found that not only did my twin sound better with the B/W from the Peavey in it but my 500 sounded better with the 4ohm JBL from my twin in it. For a while there I used both amps together! Great sound but this was when we had roadies and I didn't have to move anything from club to club but me, my guitar and b@nj@.
By the way I would love to find one of those old light weight single channel Sho-Bud solid state amps if anybody knows of one please let me know.[This message was edited by Jay Jessup on 18 February 2002 at 01:06 PM.] |

Hey Jay, was that in the ole "Northstar" days? You guys had roadies? The only stage hands "Captain Tunes" had were on the ends of our stage arms!!! I have a single channel Bud amp with the knobs across the top. It's being gone thru by a tech friend. It needed new filter caps. Has an original D130 in it. I'm looking forward to getting it back. I always thought those amps had a really cool sound. Something about the mids that were different than any other.
Keith, this is why I'm jazzed up about this Red Rhodes tube amp. (See my earlier post.) It's supposed to come today. Supposedly Red's favorite speaker for steel was a BW, and that's what's in it. I'll post my impressions if anybody is interested... |

| Anybody tried a BW in a Webb? Mine has the 4-ohm E130 but it poots a little when you romp on C6. I am a little worried about blowing it. |

Keith----it can be done with a baffle, swapping out a baffle w/15" cutout for the old 2 X 12" baffle. I believe you can buy a precut baffle from amp sources that specialize in rehabbing and reproducing this kind of stuff.

Keith, if you make a new baffle for the 15" in the Twin be sure to offset the cutout to the left looking at the front to allow the magnet to clear the output transformer, at least for the D series JBLs.

Keith, if you decide to make your own speaker baffle for a 15, make it out of 3/4 inch heavy duty marine ply. Before making the actual cut out for the speaker be sure to check the TWIN TRANSFORMER clearance so that it does not interfere with the speaker when you assemble the cabinet. You may have to slightly jog the 15 inch speaker cut-out so that the speaker basket clears the transformer.
This is a very easy modification and can be done in short order. The twin will weigh less with the 15 than with the 2-12's so that is also a benefit.
I used a D-130 in my Twin for years and it was really fine for both Steel and Tele. If I still had the Twin I would have installed a Black Widow for sure.

I put a BW 1501 DT in one of my Webbs a few day's ago, just for kick's.
to be honest, I like it a lot better than the JBL.
it takes the C6th really well, no poots !
I really like the sounds you can get with the selector on #2, and the EQ out.
