What’s the best setup for headphone practice? I am using a good-quality solid state guitar amp (Behringer GX-112) and good headphones (AKG K-240), but the pedal steel pickup is so powerful that the midrange breaks up even with the preamp level set low. Do those Peavey Nashville or Session amps have a headphone output that cuts off the speaker? Or is there some miraculous $49 stompbox that will do the trick? I’m so green at this thing I don’t dare inflict my “playing” on my long-suffering non-rock ‘n’ roll neighbors. Yet.

Dave,

You have way too much power for a pair of phones and you are overloading the input. That is why you have the level so low and it is still overloading. There are several inexpensive mixers on the market you could use to bring in the steel and perhaps a practice track as well.

Check out Mars music or even Radio Shack.

Regards,

Mark T.

I use a Rockman X-100. It comes with a set of headphones that have a real sweet sound. They are tuned somehow to get a sound none of my other headphones come close to.
It also has built in Echo (reverb) and Chorse. And it has a 1/4 inch phone outlet you can plug into your recorder. I've never tried to plug it into my amp.

One stero output on my vol pedal goes to(and thouugh) my tuner and to my Digitech 256 XL sound processor, and the other stero output goes to the Rockman. It's a real nice setup. If I want to play useing headphones I just turn the Rockman on and it's ready to go.

I use a Korg Pandora, which I really like.

I'm moving this topic to Electronics where it belongs.
