Topic: Replacement speakers for a Twin Reverb |

Can anyone recommend some replacement speakers for a Silver Face (Pre-Master Volume) Twin Reverb? I recently had it rebuilt and it sounds great, but the speakers (not original) are pretty beat up and just can’t handle the low end of the steel. Should I go with something new or find something vintage?

| B Cole, I assume you meant to say to put a 15" speaker instead of a 12" speaker. Also, the 15" you install should be 4 ohm to match the impedance of the 2 8 ohm speakers you'll be replacing. |

I have a Fender Twin Reverb that I ordered from the factory with twin JBL speakers. It came with a buzz in it but a service-tech took care of that. I don't think you can find a better sounding amp than this. The only drawback being that if you aren't careful you can get a hernia lugging it around. I put rollers under it a lift handles on both sides. If I can get a roadie to help me, I still use this amp.

Vintage 15" JBL's work great in a Twin, but you'll have to settle for an 8 ohm probably. I made that swap and I can't tell any difference in power, it's still very loud and clean.

If you decide to keep it as a 2X12 amp,
then definitely check out EVM-12L's by
Electro-Voice. They'll handle the amps
power & have a great overall tone without
the harshness of some others. It will
also keep your 4 ohm load, which is
to your advantage.

Try replacing one of the 12" speakers with a JBL or Black Widow 12". I bet you will like it better than two JBLs (or a single 15"). Try it!

Dan is on to something there. I know I tried my old JBL D-120F's with my MosValve 500 and then the Peavey BW 1203's and there's quite a difference in response.
With the D-120F's, my Franklin sounded like my old Fender 2000 steel played through a Fender Twin.
With the BW speakers, the Franklin sounds like a Franklin and had a wider response range and does not have the accented mids that the JBL's did.
I never tried one of each together. I'll have to do that sometime when I'm experimenting. |

The current MCM Electronics catalog #44 lists
12" Pyle speakers as original replacement parts for a Twin Reverb. 8 ohms, 95 watts $43.25 ea 1 to 3 units. 1-800-543-4330.

Thanks for all the insight. I think I’m gonna stick with the 2x12. I also play a tele thru this amp, and I really don’t want to mess with the guitar sound too much.
Does anyone know where I can get some vintage JBLs?
Also, what about the speakers that come with the new 65 Reissue Twins (Eminence)? I’m sure those can ordered.

I'd be interested in knowing how two different speakers sound together.
I believe that the 2x12 Matchless amps used two different speakers, and Buzz Feiten also builds a 2x12 cabinet using the same trick.
One problem doing this might be if one were a cheaper less efficient speaker and the other a more efficient type, then the better speaker would tend to drown out the other one.

| Pete. I'll have to go along with Jack Stoner on this one. I've done what Jack has done with my Twin, and it really does make a big difference, and the Peavey B W's can handle everything you can feed them, and they don't break up on the low end. What's more, it will still sound good with your six string. |

yep, they have a PCB including PCB-mounted pots.....uuuuuuuuugggggggghhhhh! I so much prefer the older amps!
As for speakers, in my tweeded up twin I have 2 12" JBL D-120F speakers in it....I wouldn't trade that thing for the world!....My Peavey can't touch it!....My Evans can't touch it!......very sweet midrange with the tweed tone stack....and a beautiful high end.....onlyiest thing, it weighs a friggin' ton!....HEAVY!

| Try Magic Parts for vintage Fender speaker replacements. They are somewhere in Ca.. I remember them haveing lots of Fender replacement parts in the 90's; perhaps they still do. |
