Deluxe Verb. Ext. Speaker ???

Post by scott anderson »

Can I run two 12" Speakers? The one that is in the cab and an ext? I found a Mojo 12" 50 watt 8ohn speaker. can I build a cab for it and plug it in to the Ext speaker jack on the amp? What about the ohn thing. I think that the amp says something about 8 ohn speaker and 4 ohn ext. will this speaker work?? Anybody tryed it how did it sound. has the Deluxe verb got enough power to push two 12" speakers?? I have a utah speaker in the deluxe are they ok? I don't se them talk about. What would be the best I am using this amp with my D-8 Stringmaster.

Sure, you can use another 8-ohm speaker. Along with the speaker in your amp, this would give you 4-ohms impedance (which is as low as you can safely go). I'm not familiar with the "Mojo", but as long as it's not one of the one's designed for use in a car (roof-shaker) system, you should be OK. Some time down the road, you may want to try a GOOD speaker, such as a Peavey Black Widow, or a good EV speaker (but not the "Force" line). You might be pleasantly surprised at the improvement in both volume, and tone!

if it's the Mojo of Mojotone fame then it's probably a good speaker already; they are among the leaders in vintage amp repro replacement speaker cabinets and the like:

Thanks for the help. I got the speaker coming, couple more questions If i build a cab for it is plywood ok?? How thick? How much bigger the the speaker should it be??
one more wild idea what it I put a delay in line to the ext speaker like a stomp box so that speaker was a little behind the the other one. would it work? thicken the sound? or bad Idea.
thanks again

bad idea!

I'm not sure if this would fry your output transformer or not, but it would definitely turn your delay pedal into an attractive doorstop/paperweight.

Stompboxes are built to take instrument-level signals (some fancier ones can accept line-level signals); you're talking about running a powered signal through it. This would surely result in meltdown.

It's a tempting idea, I know, but the only safe way to accomplish it would be to use an attenuator to step down the ext. speaker output to line level, run it through the delay, and then use an external power amp to drive the speaker cab.

Or you could buy my Deluxe Reverb (the wife says something's gotta go Image ) and run them in stereo off the pedal. Hmmm... maybe I'll buy yours!

J is right...forget that "delayed 2nd speaker" idea. Make your extension speaker box about the same size a your amp, and use plywood that's at least 5/8" thick. The open-back cabinets of the Fender amps tend to limit the lows, especially with a low-powered amp such as the Deluxe. If you want a fatter sound, then enclose the back of the cabinet you're building, and put a small port in the speaker baffle.

Mojo gets those speakers made to their
specs by Eminence. A bunch of amp companies
get theirs made by them as well...Fender,
Webb, Evans, etc.

Ok ok Glad I put that idea down here first, and didn't try it out. I guess if it would have worked I would have already read about it here.

thanks again
