Volume Pedals....

Post by Dave Long »

OK, my next piece of gear is going to be a volume pedal, and by the threads in the Forum, I believe that there are several brands that would work for me. Do these volume pedals work with a string? Sorta like a fan belt or a chain/belt on a motorcycle? Do the strings break and is this something you maintain with extra string? Or do they have gears? Thanks in advance.

Dave, looking on the cover of The Pedal Steel Newsletter, Both Herby Wallace and Doug Jernigan are useing a Hilton volume pedal. I don't have one myself, but all I have heard, they are really good. At least they don't have the old "pot" which wears out in the old pedals !! My next one will be a Hilton. Image

Some volume pedals do use a string wrapped around a pot. I've never had the string break, but it's possible I suppose. Some use a simple gear, and others use a photocell or infrared device internally.

Hey Moon, how can I get a copy, I would like to see that picture? I am aware that both Herby Wallace and Doug Jernigan use my pedal. I was not aware of this picture. Thanks!<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Keith Hilton on 16 February 2001 at 09:54 PM.]</p></FONT>

Keith -- I tried the above web site, but could not find the cover photos. Anyway, there is a full photo each of Herby and Doug showing your pedal. It is on the front cover of the Jan- Feb issue of the Pedal Steel Newsletter.

That's the link to the PSGA. Send them an email and they'll probably sell you a copy of the photo.

My two cents belong here. After playing the Edwards light beam pedal and Goodrich 122(Chalker pedal) I just received the new Hilton pedal and WOW there is no other pedal worth looking at for my money. It is IMHO the best and has no peers, thank Keith for the Maytag of pedals, Gary
