Please forgive me this transgression
I have a bashed up old Gold Star that I use minimally on gigs, but as with dobros, etc, amplifying it with an electric band is difficult.
Many years ago, I bought a Lawrence pickup which clamps on the tone ring hooks, and sits over the strings where they meet the head. It amplifies alright, but it sounds awful. Kinda like a dulcimer player on bennies
Owing to a few upcoming gigs where I'll need it, I've decided to look into some other sort of pickup which sounds preferable. I've heard talk of condenser mike pickups which mound inside the head - allegedly they sound good. Anyone have any experience, comments, advice ?
Thanks, gang
-John

Hi John,
I bought a Barcus-Berry pickup for my Banjo about 5/6 years ago, it`s specialy made for Banjos and dosent sound too bad. It comes with specially fitting attachments that fit onto the perchpole, then the wire terminates into a neat little box with a pot that accepts the jack-plug-this fixes inbetween a couple of tension brackets.
Big thing is, it`s guaranteed not to howl, shreik, or hum, in fact the banjo sound is the best I`ve heard amplified.
Hope this helps, a good friend of mine brought it back from somewhere in California and at the time was new on the market.

Bob Mainwaring. Z.Bs. and other weird things.

If you've got either the dulcimer or the bennies for sale let me know.
