I recently posted a topic asking about the tonal differences between a 1501 and a 1502 Black Widow speaker. I only got about 2 replies, which were appreciated but I would like some more feedback and info. I am asking this because I have a chance to buy a pair of speakers ans I want to make a more informed decision about the purchase. What kind of speakers did Gary Hogue use in the Peavey Classic tweed cabinets he had? Were they 1501's or 1502's? Also would like to know more about the tonal difference between these 2 speakers for steel guitar.
Thanks,

Dave, Gary used the older version of the 1502-4ohm Black Widow speaker, which had a paper cone and not the Kevlar cone. I know this as prior to Gary's death, I obtained a used paper cone 1502-4 ohm for his tweed covered steel cabinets.

We started manufacturing all BW's(except the 1501-4BW SB) with the KEVLAR cone in the early '90's. I personally haven't found the tonality of this material to perform well for steel. Therefore, that is the reason we went to painstaking measures to continue the paper coned 1501-4 ohm BW's for steel applications. However, we did revoice this model in approximately 1995.

Junior Knight also uses the 1502's, so you might want to get an opinion from him. I personally like the 1501-4 ohm paper cone BW's because of the smooth response, but each person has their own opinion.

By looking at a frequency response of the 1502-4DT BW KEVLAR speaker, you should hear an increase in the 2kHz. range. Again, the 1501-4ohm shallow basket(SB) paper cone is the only model that we now manufacture specifically for steel guitar applications. I'd say that it would be difficult to locate a new 1502-4 paper cone speaker.

Mike .. that last statement was a little unclear. Did you mean the 1501-4 paper cone is the only speaker you make for steel?

Where would I get a replacement basket and how much would I expect to pay?

Thanks,

Steve

Thanks for bringing this error to my attention. I meant the 1501-4ohm Black Widow SB is the only BW that we specifically designed for steel guitar and fiddle applications.

The U.S. MSRP for the 1501-4SB replacement basket only is $85.99 and the complete 1501-4 ohm BW SB is $165.99.

I edited my mistake on my previous post.
