Can't help but wonder what the current seller originally paid for it............
Isn't this kinda like selling your first child? |

I know that Jerry Byrd has sold instruments he has plaid and at market rate... no JB-premium attached.
As for this particular one... I can't see the letter well enough to read anything that would colaborate the serial number on the guitar... nor on the head stock... so I'd be very careful, which doesen't mean it isn't real.

I am probably wrong on this but even though the stationary looks like Jerrys, also the signature, the body of the letter is written at an angle. I have looked back at all the letters Jerry has sent me through the years and the lines are all straight. Also I believe that the only frypan Jerry recorded with was the one given or loaned to him by Pua Almeida. I am quite sure that Jerry would have to been starving to sell this FP to someone. |

Well CC........how could he have parted as he did with his Sho-Bud dbl neck? That must've been difficult. |

Like I have said, I am probably wrong on all this but there is a difference when an instrument is given to a person by another especially, Pua. I might get off a note to Jerry and see what he says. CC |

I recall Jerry saying he used a fry pan(from Pua) on record only once, on a tune from 'Steel Guitar Hawaiian Style'. So it'll be interesting to hear how Jerry fills in the blanx if CC has success reaching him.
Little doubt the JB letter is official, as the slanted handwriting is typical of the last couple of years, and otherwise is classic Byrd.
His Sho-Bud went where promised when it was no longer needed, and Jerry knew it was all over on his last flight home from a Japan gig a couple of years ago. I get the impression the end of his career came rather painless, and with a lot of satisfaction.
But that's some major change being asked for an A22, pedigree or no. |

I sold a beautiful '30s National Electric Hawaiian (gold/silver) to the seller about 18 months ago. I recall he mentioned that he was taking lessons from Jerry at the time so perhaps he obtained "favorite student" status and snagged his pan? At $6100 it looks like a new record for a steel sale could be looming on the horizon. I wonder how much of a "premium" an apprasial by Gruhn or other notable would place on Jerry's ownership and personal letter. I believe Mike N's recent pan catch on eBay and Rick A's magic was a much better deal! |
