James Brown was hospitalized Sunday, the day before Christmas, with pneumonia and died around 1:45 a.m. Christmas morning, said his agent, Frank Copsidas of Intrigue Music.

The agent said Brown's family was being notified of his death and that the cause was still uncertain. "We really don't know at this point what he died of," Copsidas said.

Truely the end of an era.
His influence is so wide it defies easy catagorization.

No James Brown music here.

However Big Sandy had a Utube clip on a Myspace post featuring Prisoner of Love.
Made me wonder what Perry Como must have thought.

Too bad, he was relatively young. But he did live a fast and hard life.

I was lucky enough to see him live a few times at his prime in the mid 60s at gritty little mostly all black venues in the South. You were basically seeing him perform "Live at the Apollo" just a few feet away - except it was 4 hours long. I'll never forget it.

Sad... sorry to see him go. I got to see him a few times and he was always awesome.
btw, in the mid-80's he recorded a very soulful version of "Tennesee Waltz".
Adios, Mr. B

James Brown was and will always be "the man" when it comes to soul, R&B, funk, or any of the styles that followed in their paths. RIP, James.

James Brown was one of the greats. An innovator, not a derivitive. Incredible energy and showmanship. He set the pace for many performers. Mr. Soul for sure. Soul to the bone. The great ones are leaving us and there doesn't seem to be anyone behind them.

He lived at least two full lives in the span of one shorter life compared to most. When you think about it, he died on a very specail day for many. Maybe that was one of his blessings.

Although his music was not to my liking, he was a giant in his field of music. I salute you James Brown, RIP. Jody.

I saw him with the full show at the Newport Rock Festival in 1969. It was a jaw-dropping performance.

I was at that show too! It was unbelievable! In 1969 the promoters (of the Newport Jazz Festival) decided to include rock bands. I also remember seeing Blood Sweat & Tears, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Frank Zappa, and others. I can't believe that it was almost 40 years ago... eek!

That was a fun summer for me: Newport in July, Woodstock in August, Tanglewood several times... all distant memories now.

James Brown was the embodiment of Soul, the father of Funk, and the godfather of Rap (although he hated the modern lyrics). And his powerhouse dancing singer act was copied by everyone from Mick Jagger to Michael Jackson. He spent time in prison, was a tough guy to work with, and had some shameful domestic episodes. But he was also the champion of black pride (Say it Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud), education (Don't Be a Dropout) and for poor people in the ghettos (Santa Claus, Go Straight to the Ghetto). And he was a patriot (Living in America). But to me his most outstanding trait was that his music was always completely honest, with no compromise, and straight from his heart. That's why he was so great.

A guy I know worked on one of Maceo Parker's saxes recently. There was a handwritten note in the case from JB- it said: "Maceo. I love you like a brother, and you're a great horn man. But you been messin' up..."
