Film director Penelope Spheres made 2 documentaries, one about punk rock and the other about heavy metal, called "The Decline And Fall Of Western Civilization. and (if I'm not mistaken,) "The Decline And Fall Of Western Civilization Volume 2."

Hiphop may have too much volume.
And it certainly takes up space;
on the airwaves.
But for something so much of a void,
how could it's lack of actual mass,
have such mass appeal.
Could so many heads be so empty that,

| Do you remember how riled-up, annoying and downright dangerous "the people" got in the 60's and early 70's? I suspect there are millions of young people who would love to listen to some intelligent, challenging, "radical" music right now, and I equally suspect that if it started popping up on MTV or VH1 they'd be off the air in a heartbeat. |

I think hip hop is the ultimate example of people confusing poetry and music.
Now I've never heard anything even remotely resembling poetry in hip hop. Mostly it's just a lot of profanity. The previously forbidden words seem to have become not just permissable, but manditory.
But it is possible that there are really talented wordsmiths working with rap. It's possible that there are rappers who are talking about real world events and teaching their fans (who would tune out if the same things were mentioned in school.) None of us really know what's going on in that world.
But IMHO it's not music. |

There are examples of urban music that have interesting figures--usually sampled--happening behing the words.
But I have yet to hear a 'vocal' that relates to whatever music there is present. IF anything, the vocal seems to avoid anything that could be called melody.
Even good poetry doesn't do well when delivered monotone. |

For ever Gil-Scott Heron doing real Street Poetry,
with a positive social concience,
or
even Will Smith doing an updated version of the same,
there are 10,000 mysogenist nit wits,
stealing other peoples short hooks as samples,
and doing nothing more than 'Street Signifying"
or making those around you think you are the tougher person.
That it has spilled out into more polite society,
is it's connection to juvinalia.
Young kids feel a need to build themselves up,
doing a personal RAP can build cred with friends,
when you are 13.
Well a bunch 13 year olds are now 25-30,
and still doing it.
Last night I was dragged out to
"Dance tonight darling", well the 1st place Fusion,
was empty, but had an Arsenal / Liverpool game on,
The music was tolerable synth based stuff, and not to bad.
The 2nd round was really obnoxious inner-city
ganster rap and their Molls doing the inverse.
I had to take my beer outside and sit, couldn't stand it.
It's odd that I sat there WISHING MC Hammer would make a comeback on the DJ turntable.
If he had played Federline, I woulda slapped him.
Donny, Britany is a babe, and seems to sing on key.
But she's no Heddy Lamarr by a long shot. 
She is a slightly dimbulb still, but heck she's young.
I can't imagine living with her of course.
We had a request to play some Cheese Saturday night.
We played our blues/latin/rock version of 'Oops!'
Went over well too. Not a synth in sight.
