I've seen some great ones mentioned! Ones that tend to get me are "The Farmer's Daughter" and "Green Green Grass of Home". Hag puts a little more sadness in the latter, though I must admit Porter's singing is pretty sad. Image

I agree that almost everyone of the songs that have been sited are great songs, but I still maintain that Hank Sr’s. song, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” (ISLICC)is one of if not the best sad songs ever penned,

"I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" is definitely one of the saddest country songs. Hank Williams knew how to sing a sad country song. I learned that when Hank would do a show, he always wanted to see people cryin', and if there weren't any people cryin', Hank would tell his steel player, Don Helms to play a real high steel turnaround so people would start cryin'. It's too bad they aren't recording songs like these anymore.

"My Daddy is Only a Picture" by Eddy Arnold altho' "I've Got Tears In My Ears from Lying on my Back In My Bed While I Cry Over You" by Homer & Jethro runs a close second.

I think Anita You're Dreaming by Waylon and Jessie Colter is the prettiest sad song. Anything I sing sounds pretty sad.

Not sure who wrote it, but Don Williams had the hit.
"Some Broken Hearts Never Mend"

Some broken hearts never mend...
Some memories never end...
Some tears will never dry...
My love for you will never die...

Man, that's some sad stuff.

Wayland Holyfield wrote Don Williams' song "Some Broken Hearts Never Mend". Another sad song is Vince Gill's "Go Rest High On That Mountain". Vince started to write that song after Keith Whitley died and a few years later, he finished writing the song after his brother died. Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel, GFI Ultra D-10

In addition to "Old Violin" by Johnny Paycheck, which I referred to previoiusly, "Blue Moon With Heartache" by Roseann Cash gets to me. The whole song, instrumentation, tone, vocal delivery, all of it is just loaded with melancholy, especially the line "Maybe I'll Just Go Away".

you guys have pretty much nailed all the ones that first come to mind to me. For honerable mention I would have to say "Kiss Her Once For Me", by Delbert McClinton on his latest recording, the Cost Of Living.

Also, "Shelly's Winter Love" by Merle.

For a newer country song, I would have to say, ALMOST HOME by Craig Morgan.
Pretty sad!
