Nashville Star " are you paying attention ?

Considering that the 2005 American Idol winner has claimed all the top spots on the CMT charts, being Carrie Underwood..like her or not...I happen to...

American Idol..isn't that the show that is supposed to be focused on the POP world ? And here we have a Country Gal taking home the entire slab of Bacon ?

American Idol gathered over 500 million votes for the final 12 contestants over the cycle of the show..Carrie winning was no fluke...

So..basically, Country IS NOT DEAD...maybe boring as all get go,..but certainly not DEAD ...

Where are the Nashville Star winners ?
Brad Potter...

and the latest STAR...Erika Jo...

Last night my wife and I watched the CMT video countdown for the first time in probably 3 or 4 months...

WOW..theres George Canyon..! What happened to his singing career and lift off from N Star ?

As Bonnie, my wife, so gently stated it last night..

His new career is to now introduce the video of the American Idol winner..

So I gotta ask..Nashville Star, are you paying attention ?

If it wasn't for Buddy Jewel and Miranda Lambert...who finished 3rd place behind the Armadillo singing Tex Mex guy..there would be nothing to show for 3 seasons...both Buddy and Miranda came from season 1...

just throwin' it out there....

Why watch it in the first place; it only encourages the parasites that run the show. From what I understand, if you win, you have to sign over most of your rights to them. The way I see it, contests are for horses. It is so pathetic watching the anxious hopefuls over-singing to a bunch of lizard-like judges, with their smug self-proclaimed superiority. I'd sooner watch a show about fly-fishing.

Uh, that would be John Arthur Martinez. He's a friend of mine, also a great guy, a fine songwriter, and a very intelligent fellow with several careers.

I didn't interpret your post as a slam on JAM, I just wanted to add information about him for the benefit of the Forum.

No Herb it was not a slam..I just could not remember his name..
what ever happend with him, anything? I recall seeing a CD I think a year or so back...I remember he sang a song about an Armadillo...

I guess he got signed like the other few did ?

and PLUS, as far as watching the show, I really enjoy it..I like the whole deal.

Too bad Buddy got dropped. Guess radio didn't play him enough and record sales weren't up to par. Same goes for Erika Jo, she's a good singer too.
Brad Cotter has problems I hear.
I enjoy watching these shows also. It's a great way to be heard.

Carrie is well on here way! She's very good and I'm happy for her.

I hate to hear that about Buddy Jewel. I met him out back of the Ryman little over a year ago. Really nice, sincere fella. Hopefully something else comes up for him.

Sorry to hear about Buddy too, but it is no surprise. He was just a run of the mill singer in my opinion. Didn't really put out anything that would be memorable.

Carrie Underwood is a very good singer and I like her a lot. She did a great job on the National Anthem at today's Seattle/Carolina game.

yes, bad news about Buddy. FIne singer, probably better than most..but I guess thats not whats important anymore.We met him just a lttle while after the NStar thing..nice guy to chat with..but not a live wire thats for sure...Terry Clark was at the same small show here in Charlotte..now SHE is a LIVE Wire !

Muscles, hats..tight pants( leather) slim,hanging out with Movie Stars,( even marrying them for a few days) is more important than the actual music itself..or perhpas equally as important.

I think it's a fad and at some point the music will return, it always does.

I am hopeful that NStar will produce a Carrie Underwood..or at least someone that can hang with her on the charts...

Yes, and sell records! Radio is a big part too!

Buddy is a great singer. Hopefully, he'll get picked up again. He'll do fine working the road, writing, even back up singing.

There is some secret formula in certain singers that enables them to somehow appeal to the masses.
My daughter (age 25) "hates" country music but loves Carrie Underwood, Shania Twain, Faith Hill and LeAnn Rimes.
If you're going to be a "Nashville Star", I guess you have to follow that formula.

I hate to rain on your Utopia, guys, but...

Tony, I'm optimistic that the music will return and the fad will fade as well.

The thing is, once we get all these people who don't care about the music to go away and leave us alone, then fewer of us will have a gig.
When country is in a commercial phase, we complain about it (on the way to a gig).
The classic commercial conundrum.

My brother John Steele has nailed it.

Adjusted for inflation, the most bucks I made per gig performing as a picker was when I was playing in a cover band in the "Urban Cowboy" era during the early to mid-1980's.

As in all eras of C&W, there was some great stuff and there was some real "dreck." (excuse the use of colloquial Yiddish.

) Since I like doo-wop, I dug the Johnny Lee material and that held me in good stead when I got to play some gigs with JL a couple years ago.

OTOH, what I call the "Wind Beneath My Wings-syndrome" songs I didn't care for at all, which included most stuff by Kenny Rogers/Dolly Parton, Lee Greenwood, Gary Morris (though he has great vocal chops), and a few others.

Last "Nashville Star" show I watched was when Erica Jo won. Didn't have a problem with the singers. I didn't like the judges, especially the female judge. Add a rock and roll guitar player/singer to that and makes you wonder where country music is headed. I rather see the audience vote on a winner. At least the young singers wouldn't get the negative end of the deal like some of them were getting from a female judge. Let the majority rule. As in VOTE!

My family enjoys both American Idol and Nashville Star. Yes it's easy to second guess the judges merits for being a judge, but every one of them I've seen has some insight at different times and something incredibly ridiculous to say at other times. Despite obvious money behind winners of these things, who is to say which person will "take off" when their music hits the real world. CU may be the most promissing of all the winners and runners up we've seen. She's good, has a lot of appeal, has plenty of time to develop a great career etc. I think Buddy is also an excellent bet to do well as time goes on even if what is being said about a temporary setback is the case. How many stars with staying power have had ups and downs in their careers?
