I've worked out an intro and a couple of choruses to "Les Yeux Noir" on 6 string reso. Greald Ross is cleaning it up a bit and hopefully will be able to post it soon.
It ain't Tchavolo Schmitt, but it's interesting. |

I've seen and heard Chuck perform that number on "Lil Ricky" when he played the 2004(3?) PSGA show. Yes, he plays a beautiful rendition.

Very very cool. That footage of Django & Stephane playing while the boyz play poker---somehow I felt like taking up smoking again after watching it. Mmmm... that Laramie goodness.
First footage I've ever seen of Django picking. I had to go and put on the only CD I've got. It's not great but it'll have to do. |

Great stuff! Thanks for posting the link. There's something magical about the combination of gypsy jazz and a Selmer Maccaferri guitar.
If you like the playing of Django you will also like the CDs "Blues For A Gypsy" by Frank Vignola, "Spirit Of Django" by Martin Taylor and the George Van Epps/Howard Alden collaborations "Keepin' Time" and "Seven & Seven". The movie "Sweet and Lowdown" with Sean Penn featured Howard Alden's guitar playing).

Django is still unbeatable as far as I'm concerned. For modern players, my favorites are Raphel Fays and Robin Nolan. Robin is one of the few I've heard who seems to be expanding and building the traditional Gypsy jazz style through original music rather than playing yet another version of minor swing at light speed.
Slightly off topic, there is a new DVD documentary and biography of Grapelli available from:

It's kind of expensive but I ordered the book. I'll post about it if it turns out to be wonderful. Now if someone had only given me the complete Jelly Roll Morton Library of Congress recordings for xmas/Hanukah .... |
