I was in a music store today and the conversation went like this, "Yea I've heard a pedal steel before. The Moody Blues had a lot of it on one of their albums back in the 80's I think".
Does anyone know if that's true and if it is, would it be worth me trying to get a copy of the CD? I don't know which songs or CD had steel on them. |

I've been a big fan of the Moody Blues and there isn't any steel that I can recall. They used the Mellotron for those big string sounds. Their first 5 albums were fantastic. |

I've never noticed any steel on any Moody Blues tunes. (And, if you'll pardon the shameless promotion, I'll mention that I have cut a steel guitar instrumental version of "Nights in White Satin" on my CD, "Four to the Bar", available here on the Forum.) We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread. |

No steel - just lots of mellotron. Your guy's a knucklehead. Mellotrons were cool tho - a sort of analog tape based precursor to a modern digital sampler. Kinda like 63 echoplex tape cartridges driven by a keyboard. I worked on a couple and they broke down all the time.

Yeah, the only Moody Blues tune I have ever
heard steel on is Jim's version,
and it is very nice too.
But in my producers imagination,
I wish they HAD used steel sometimes,
I think it would have fit. |

Steve Howe played pedal and non-pedal steel with Yes-- people sometimes get the two bands mixed up. |
