What's a good small bass amp?
Light, capeable of handling a Jazz Trio in a small (~100 seat) venue. Line out and clean tone are the only prerequisites. |

How small do you want?
My wife is using a Carvin Pro Bass 200, with a 15" speaker - less than 50 lbs.
It will work for small or large gigs and doesn't sound bad with steel. |

SWR has a Workingman's 1-15" combo that I've heard on small to medium gigs direct to P.A., and it gave off more than enough monitor for the bassist. It's compact, and looks pretty light as well. Ebay might have one there for a good price.

I would recommend the Acoustic Image for upright or acoustic bass, but for electric bass, the Ampeg would probably be better. I have an Acoustic Image Coda R, and I love it for acoustic and Jazz guitar. Although I've never tried an electric bass through it. Its 250 watts in a cigar box size head (300 watts at 2 ohms).

| Not sure what model Ampeg my former steady bar gig had as the house bass rig but it is fairly small, sounds pretty good, but, after hauling it up the stairs from the cellar every week for two years I can tell you that it ain't light. |

Hartke 350 watts.. 4x10 cab.
Thats right..a real rig..
not really all that big either..
It's kinda like you get what you pay for...
This in my view is the minimum setup for TONE and CLEAN..

Mike Chapman,bass player on a lot of hits(ALL Garth Brooks'albums)uses a little bitty Gallien-Krueger amp on live gigs...it sounds great and is a little bigger than a Champ...

In 25+ years of bass freelancing in NY,my rig has gotten smaller and smaller. I'm now down to the little G/K 1x12 combo and the 1x12 cab G/K makes to go with it. If that's not enough volume,I can go into the PA,and if the PA isn't able to handle bass,it's not my problem. So far,over a couple of years with this rig, no complaints of any significance, and I can carry the whole thing on the subway.

| Consider this another vote for Acoustic Image... upright or fender jazz it doesn't let me down... i run it through a Raezer's Edge 1x12 cab and it's on the money. |

No-one's mentioned the tiny Polytone amp - light as a feather and they sound great, especially on upright.
