DeFord Bailey.......A good choice for the HOF. He was a harmonica ace and early cast member of the Opry who was very popular and terribly mistreated at times because of his race.
Glen Campbell?......Sure, why not? He's always been a country musician who could do it all. His Goodtime Hour featured a lot of country acts on national TV when no one else did. On top of that he had a bunch of hits and played and sang on a lot of other artists recordings.
Alabama?.....No steel guitars on their records but they had one helluva long string of number one records and they were all good. One of my favorites of their's is "I'm Not That Way Anymore" which told a good story. I'm glad they're gonna be in the HOF......JH in Va.

I believe Alabama was the easy choice for the 1975-present category.
The interesting question is, if the HOF is going to attempt to stay away from electing folks that are currently active, who are the likely cantidates from the '75-current category?
My pick for '06: Chris LeDoux
(I believe Garth Brooks is still only on vacation)

Ben, I'd be curious to know what Chris Ledoux did to merit entrance in the HOF. No offense intended but I never found him to be a good singer. He had a short career and notoriety that found him late in his life, and to be sure died to soon but HOF? I don't think early death is enough. Mel Street died early. Is he in the HOF? He could sing.

Guys, remember the categories. Mel Street would fall into the WWII-1975 category, right?
My point with LeDoux is that I wonder how plentiful the pool is for 1975-present, before they start inducting the Randy Travis' and Marty Stewarts of the world (ie. artists that are currently active)????
Yes, I think George Strait would have been the obvious choice, but the choice of Alabama (43 #1's??) over King George (51 #1's?) tells me that they are going to try (for now) to induct folks that are no longer active.
So, if you exclude those that have charted in the past 5 years, who's left? (1975-present only) That's my question.
As for LeDoux specifically, his musical career started in the mid 70's, 36 albums, but only became a star in the early 90's because of Garth Brooks. I'd venture a guess that LeDoux is one of the top selling INDAPENDENT country artists if you count up all the albums he sold before signing with Capital in about ’91.
And NO, none of this matters, at all. I’m just trying to avoid doing real work on a Friday after a long week and a holiday coming up.

I personally think the Country Music Hall of Fame has turned into a joke; I liked the old facility much better! My girlfriend and I visited the new facility for the first time one Saturday last November, and almost everybody that worked there looked like street trash, used foul language, and seemed to be blissfully ignorant of any historical value of the relics on display. I told my girlfriend that they ought to pay me to take them on a tour instead. I felt extremely uncomfortable, not to mention out of place. Also, where did all of the old stuff go? I visited the old facility when I was 17 in 1997, and I remember there being a whole lot more on display there as opposed to this new facility.
As far as the inductees go, my opinions match those of the senior citizen crowd. I would love to see a couple of sidekicks, notably Don Rich and Don Helms, inducted as members of the Country Music Hall of Fame, but that will probably never happen. Nashville leaves me feeling empty everytime I go up there. Memphis is a sad case, too, but Nashville appears to be content with blotting-out its rich musical heritage, especially with the albums it turns out.
Sorry for being so long-winded; thanks for your time!
Yours truly,

Elvis did record among other Country songs the fine old sad song "Old Shep". Chris as somebody recorded many good Country albums before we ever heard of Garth Brooks. He wrote some cowboy songs and recorded with many fine musicians before Chris became Country rock. A many talented man. I'm with Connie Smith first saw her in the 1960s, she was great on stage from the beginning.
