New nominees include pioneer rapper Grandmaster Flash, Miles Davis, Cat Stevens and disco wigglers Chic. I mean, I love Miles Davis, and the others could certainly be construed as being musically skilled in their positions, but I also love rock & roll and now I'm confused. Are there really still so many Cat Stevens fans left out there, spending money, that it's even worth pandering to them? Miles' electric albums of the late 60's certainly changed the course of music, but it's quite a stretch to call them rock & roll. Honk if you're headed for Cleveland!... we can shake our thangs together at the Chic exhibit. |

Didn't this thing start out being a nod to the rock'n'roll pioneers of the 1950s? They've been blurring the lines of demarcation ever since.
Lord knows, nobody's a bigger fan of James Taylor than I am, but he's hardly a rock'n'roll singer! This latest crop of inductees is even more odd, but I guess they want to perpetuate the commercial appeal of their musuem, so this disparity is inevitable.
Obviously, 'Pop Music Hall of Fame' would be more appropriate, but I don't see it changing now.

First, let's just look at the glaring omissions.....
The Hollies
Paul Revere & The Raiders
The Monkees
Michael Nesmith (creator of MTV....don't blame him for what it became! Oh..and a pioneer of country-rock)
The Ventures
KISS
Van Halen
Any.....and I mean ANY....of those bands had more RnR hits and a stronger influence on the Rock-n-rollers who came after them than Joe Tex or the Sir Douglas Quintet.
Now....the big problem with the list of inductees.....how in the heck does Grandmaster Flash qualify as "ROCK AND ROLL"?!?!? I'll give you that '50s country and R&B artists led to the development and inspiration for rock and roll.....RAP HAS NOT DONE THIS. Rap is rap is rap is rap. Yes....you can say bands like Living Colour or Antharax had some rap influences on some tracks they did, but to induct a rap group might be pushing it. At least this rap group.....I mean, Run DMC, if ANY rap group is to be inducted, should be the FIRST. Period.
It's hard to find fault with any of the remaining nominees.....unless I compare them to those who I listed above that still haven't been inducted and aren't current nominees.
Oh well.....hey, if Grandmaster Flash DOES get inducted, then here's hoping Paul Revere & The Raiders get into the Rap Hall Of Fame down the road.

Apparently the RR HOF has descended into the great abyss of politics, political correctness and money-craziness.
Miles Davis? Maybe- but I question his influence on rock and roll.
WHO is Grandmaster Flash? I honestly have never heard of him.
Chic? Forget it.
Has the Average White Band been inducted? They should be.
I agree with Joe that the Monkees had a huge impact on RnR in the 60's, and it should be recognized. People who were not there and don't have any real-time knowledge have branded them as "the pre-fab four," but there was tremendous talent and creativity among those four guys. "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones" was a brilliant album, and is still among my favorite 60's records.

What about Tom Dowd?Or Deep Purple(Smoke on the Water)or Derek and the Dominos(Layla)? Those two tunes have hook licks that DEFINE rock and roll...

Sure, this has evolved from r&r to pop, just as the music world has, no doubt about it. The problem is that there is no serious definition for "real" r&r any more than there is a real definition about what constitutes "real" country, blues, jazz, or anything else. So, of course, it's complete politically-correct chaos.
Cat Stevens? Pretty silly, but I'm not surprised. Myself, I lose no sleep over any of this. Great music speaks for itself, and will stand the test of time. |
