My friend, Jim Moulton has written this review of George's new CD which is now, or soon will be available. Sounds like a dandy!

.............................................

Well Friends, George Jones (The Possum) is back, sounding and looking as good as ever. This is stone cold country music.
I love the idea for this disc, he picked out eleven songs that were pitched to him over the years, but he rejected them and they became hits for other people. So he decides to do them for us here.
George is off of a Major label, but the quality is good as ever. Keith Stegall is the producer (Alan Jackson), recorded at Reba's Starstruck studios and a couple of other Nashville studios.
An incredible studio band, Brent Mason on electric lead guitar, playing some old time country licks. Eddie Bayers on drums. Glenn Worf on bass, Larry Franklin on fiddle and mandolin. Paul Franklin on pedal steel and dobro. Pig Robbins on piano. Rhonda Vincent and Dolly Parton on background and other vocals.
Some great pics of Jones and the artists he has recorded in the liner notes. Paul Franklin plays old fashioned pedal steel where the steel weeps with emotion.
"Today I Started Loving You Again" (Haggard) - Great Haggard tune, a genuine cry in your beer song, great steel and awesome background vocals by Rhonda Vincent.
"On The Other Hand" - a great retro country tune originally recorded by Randy Travis, great version by the Possum.
"Pass Me By" - Great country song first recorded by Janie Fricke. Just a real refreshing song. Some real nice guitar work by Mason. A bit of noticeable clipping.
"The Blues Man" (with Dolly Parton) (Hank Williams Jr.) This song sends chills thru me, Jone's deep vocals still can reach down and grab you. Hank Jr. wrote it about his dad. Great guitar break by Mason. So emotive, Dolly sounds great, they sound great together. Nice pedal steel by Franklin.
"Here In The Real World" (Jackson/Irwin) Jones always had respect for Alan Jackson as the current torch bearer for traditional country music. "The Boy don't always get the Girl here in the Real World" Great Pic of George on the stage with Alan obviously admiring him as he plays guitar.
"He Stopped Lovin' Her Today" This is a remake of one of Jones' career songs. I'll be honest, this is pretty good, but I like the original version, don't like the odd background vocals on this version. But, I' ll say that George is enjoying every minute. His vocals still sound strong and very emotive.
Jones is a living legend. This album is just more proof of it. Just a great selection of real country songs. If you are a traditional country music fan, this disc is a must have for you.

"Funny How Time Slips Away" "On The Other Hand"
"Detroit City" "Pass Me By"
"The Blues Man" "Skip A Rope"
"Here In The Real World" "Too Cold At Home"
"If You're Gonna Do Me Wrong" "Busted"
"Today I Started Lovin' You Again" "He stopped Lovin' Her Today" www.georgejones.com

I always considered "Pass Me By", a Johnny Rodriguez tune. I know Janie did it but always liked Johnny's version.

George recorded "Pass Me By" on one of his albums from the 70's. "the Grand Tour was the name of the album I think. I have always liked that version better than Johnny R's. I like JR's version but come on its George Jones.

This is the song where Paul Overstreet had reservations about this unknown new guy recording it. Paul having already scored some major artist hits took a chance. We know what happened next.

Brett, Johnny and George must have both recorded it at about the same time. I know Hillman Hall, Tom T's brother, wrote it. The point I was making was Johnny recorded it long before Janie Fricke did, and just wanted to make sure Johnny got some credit too. It doesn't really matter I guess. I just know that Jones could sing the phone book and make a person cry. He is one of my faves. I will be getting the album.

I got to pick that one up. The possume has always been my favorite singer, with the Hag a close 2nd.
I was told my someone at Ronnie Neighbor's steel guitar show last fall that George Jones was losing his voice. Was soundin a little flat. Just wondered since he's gettin up there in age if this was true?

I made a special trip to Wal-Mart today to pick up George's new CD. While I was there, I picked up Gene Watson's new one "Then and Now" Both are SUPER and must-haves if you like good, traditional country with plenty of steel and fiddle. Paul Franklin is on George's CD and Sonny Garrish is on Gene's. I would recommend them both very highly!!!

Pauls playing is superb.
These songs have been covered
by a lot of people and yet Paul
plays them with a new twist.
Now I'm really jealous, ha.

I got a sneak preview of this CD Saturday nite and it's truly amazing....I don't buy many CDs...the ones I listen to are usually traded to me for my own, but my next trip to town (Saturdays, usually) I WILL buy this one.
